Obituary For Amelia M. Finnegan

It is with great sadness that we said goodbye on Saturday, May 3, 2025, to Mila "Amelia Maras" Finnegan. Born by a midwife on Nash Street on Pittsburgh's North Side on July 3, 1923 to Mirko and Anna (Starcevic) Maras, Mila lived all 101 years in Pittsburgh.

Lovingly survived by son Daniel Finnegan, daughter-in-law Diane (DeFilippo) Finnegan, grandchildren Patrick Finnegan (Christine), Daniel Finnegan, Jr. (Beth), Robert J. Finnegan (Trent Michaels), great-grandchildren Mila and Ellie and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents, Mila was preceded in death by her husband Robert Clemens Finnegan, son Robert Maras Finnegan, daughter-in-law Dawn (Turney) Finnegan and sister Anne Ferketish.

Mila had an artistic flair, was a wonderful cook and baker and a seamstress who made outfits for herself and others. She even made her own wedding gown.

Mila's life revolved around her love of family, her Catholic faith, her Croatian heritage (she spoke fluent Croatian) and love of cats. Nothing would have made her happier than if her entire family could have lived together with a common courtyard. She taught her boys the Guardian Angel prayer in Croatian that was said each night before bed. Many other prayers and songs were often heard throughout the house. Over the years she remained in contact with relatives in Croatia thru phone calls and letters. One of her lifelong dreams was fulfilled in 2005 when she visited her beloved Croatia, to the town where her parents were born, raised and married, and met some of her cousins for the first time! She also took great pride in her volunteering activities with the Christian Mothers and at the age of 93 as a cat cuddler at Animal Friends.

Friends will be received at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Thursday morning at 9:00 followed by Mass of Christian Burial in St.Teresa of Kolkata Parish, Church of the Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers family suggests donations to Animal Friends, 562 Camp Horne Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mila. My family and I lived next door to Mila on Parklyn until a few years ago. She was the absolute best neighbor. She was so sweet and kind. Our kids, Adam & Devin, loved seeing her in the backyard and always wanted to say hello to her and her cats. I regret not keeping in touch after we moved, I am sure she would have loved to see how big the kids have gotten. She was an angel on earth and now she is has found her home in heaven to smile down on us all. Thank you for sharing your mother and grandmother with us. Your family are in our thoughts and prayers. -Meghan, Roger, Adam & Devin Krawchyk
