Obituary For Annabelle M. (Lee) Maurer

of Whitehall, finished her beautiful journey in this present life, and entered eternal life, on February 20, 2026, having just reached her 96th birthday.

Annabelle was a devout Roman Catholic, whose long life was founded on faith and family.

Annabelle Lee was born in Pittsburgh in 1930, the first child of Dan H. Lee Sr. and Ida (Schilken) Lee. Later her brothers Dan H. Lee Jr. and Robert E. Lee were added to the family.

The family moved several times as her father’s job as a civilian contractor to the Army required. So Annabelle attended several different Catholic schools in Pittsburgh as well as Buffalo, N.Y.

She graduated from St. George High School in the Allentown Section of Pittsburgh and went on to business school which prepared her to become an executive secretary. She was employed in that capacity for a vice president of the Koppers Corporation, until she married Robert (“Bob”) J. Maurer in 1953.

As Bob worked to build a successful career in hospital administration, they moved numerous times - while also building their family. Annabelle and Bob lived in Jacksonville, Fla.; then back to Pittsburgh where they had their first three sons: Paul, Robert Jr, and Thomas. Then they moved to Johnstown, PA, where they had a fourth son, Daniel. Then they moved to Rockford, IL, where they finally had a daughter, Kathleen, to complete the family. They then moved to Grosse Pointe Park, MI; Brookville, PA; and finally, in 1975, back to Pittsburgh, settling in Whitehall.

Often, as Bob would take a better position at a new hospital in a new city, it was Annabelle who would largely orchestrate the moving process, all while caring for children and pets. Her strength, determination, dedication, organizational skills, and faith enabled her to gracefully pull it off. She raised five children through the 60’s and 70’s, sometimes with Bob out of town. And while those children lived at home, there were non-negotiable rules and standards of conduct that involved household chores, meals together (which began with prayer), curfews, praying a family rosary during Lent, and weekly Mass attendance (although she herself often attended other times as well).

Faith and education were top priorities for Annabelle and Bob, and they promoted both by sending their children to Catholic schools whenever possible. Annabelle worked with each of her children as they grew, reading to and with them, reviewing (and sometimes supplementing) homework, and drilling flashcards. All five of her children can attribute the success of their careers to the foundations she and Bob instilled and the college education they provided.

Annabelle gave a beautiful example of commitment to marriage and family throughout her adult life. She helped her parents in their later years and, after her father’s death, she took in her mother and cared for her from the time Ida had a debilitating stroke until her death three years later.

Annabelle made sure the family always had memorable summer vacations, and wonderful birthdays and holidays. She supported and encouraged her children in all kinds of activities and tried to promote a broad range of experiences and interests.

Annabelle was a loving mother to, and survived by: Paul Maurer (Sheryl) of Parker, CO; Dr. Robert Maurer (Donna) of Hershey, PA; Thomas Maurer (Michele) of Rochester, NY; Rev. Daniel Maurer, a priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh; and Kathleen Koltas (David) of Pittsburgh.

She was also a loving grandmother to 13, a great-grandmother to 9, and leaves behind many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was a loving sister to Robert Lee (Pat) of Pittsburgh.

She is preceded in death by her parents Dan and Ida; her husband, Bob (decd, 2006); her brother, Dan (decd, 2025), and his wife, Bonnie; her brother-in-law, Gilbert, and his wife, Ret.

Family and friends are welcome for visitation from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church, Our Lady of Hope Parish, 5200 Greenridge Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. Everyone is asked to meet at the church. Burial will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Annabelle’s name to Our Lady of Hope Parish, 7003 Baptist Rd, Bethel Park, PA 15102.

Dear Kathy and family, It is my pleasure to have known your Mom! I so enjoyed our time together in the dental office, as we tried to get dental cleanings completed amidst our varied conversations. She was a special person in my life, even though I only saw her twice a year. My condolences to the Maurer family. Although 96 years seems like a long life. For all of you, it wasn't nearly long enough. Connie Havrilla
