Obituary For Carolyn Kelver McLean

Born on August 3, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter and second child of Homer and Mildred Kelver. Carolyn received her registered nursing degree from St. Joseph’s Hospital in South Bend, and worked at Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. and in Pittsburgh. She met her the love of her life and future husband, James McLean, on a blind date when he was a senior at the University of Notre Dame. They were married on September 5, 1953 and celebrated 65 years of marriage together. Carolyn is preceded in death by her husband, Jim, her parents, siblings Daniel Kelver, Roseanne (Kwasnezski) and Delbert Kelver and great grandson, Emerson. She is survived by her sister, Maribel (Early), her children Jim (Regina), David (Judy) and Kathleen Cerrone (Marc), as well as 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. An avid reader and lover of folk music (“The Train They Call the City of New Orleans”) and anything by Neil Diamond (but especially “Sweet Caroline”), Carolyn devoted her life to the care and loving of her family, which began with her special relationship with her husband, Jim, and grew as her family did with love for children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. An assorted range of talents from knitting afghans to baking delicious cookies served and endeared her to her family. What will be remembered most is her kind spirit and quick and ever-present smile, which remained to the end. Arrangements handled by John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Catherine Laboure Parish in St. Louise de Marillac Church on Monday, May 2, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to People Concerned for the Unborn Child, 3030 Pioneer Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15226, www.pcuc.org, or Friendship Village of South Hills, Boyce Road, Upper St. Clair, PA 15241.
