Obituary For Catherine M. (Auen) Priano

Age 94 of Whitehall passed peacefully on Sunday, July 12, 2026, while holding her daughter's hand.

Beloved wife of the late Tony; loving mother of four sons Tony, Gerry (Mimi), Al (Cheryl) and Jeff (Linda) and one daughter, Karen. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren (10 boys and 1 girl), and 25 great-grandchildren (20 boys and 5 girls). Preceded in death by her parents, siblings and grandson Zachary.

Cathy was born on July 25, 1931, and grew up in Mt. Oliver. She was the third of seven children of Anthony and Catherine (Baldauf) Auen. She met the love of her life, Tony, doing the Jitterbug at Sully's, a dance hall in Brentwood. They were married for 62 years.

Throughout her life, Cathy's pride was her large, close family, one filled with laughter and song. They lived in a home built by her husband and Cathy was the accountant for his construction business. She also helped him to prepare their driveway for concrete, while she was carrying her third child.

Cathy was Vice-President of the St. Elizabeth Church Senior Citizen's Group and worked with Tony directing the Seniors' trips for many years, traveling everywhere from the Caribbean to Panama to Nova Scotia. She was also involved with the St. Elizabeth Spring-A-Rama, working the poker table with her husband and played cards for decades with her women's group.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Tuesday and Wednesday, July 14 and 15, 2026 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Thursday morning at 10:15. Tony, Gerry, Al and Jeff, My deepest condolences to you and your family for the loss of your mother. I never had the pleasure of meeting her, but having played (and refereed) hockey with you for 30+ years, I can surmise that she gave you much of the quality of character that you possess. My thoughts and prayers are of you in this difficult time.

Remembering Mom - I am proud of my Mom! As I look at her extended family, I can see the impact that she had on all of us. I remember as a youngster, the love, the humor and the music that she bestowed upon us and I can see the impact that it has had on future generations. The scenes in the hospital this past week reinforces this thought. In the ICU, where we were to have between 2 and 5 people in the room, the number swelled into the teens with the singing and the humor flying. Just as I thought we would all be thrown out, the nurse made the comment "I wish it could have been like this for my grandmother." Then the impact was further demonstrated. As we complained that food services delivered vanilla pudding, to which we replied "Someone in this condition deserves chocolate!", the nurse returned after her shift was complete with chocolate pudding that she purchased from the cafeteria. Even less than a week prior to Mom's passing, her impact continued. And will continue. And not to family alone. In speaking to neighbors and friends of hers, she had an impact on them as well. As only Mom could. What a special woman. It was not easy raising the 5 of us as I am sure, if you have gotten to know us, you must agree! With Dad working long hours, it all fell upon Mom. I remember the ultimate punishment. When we were REALLY bad, she would make us sit on a chair in the kitchen until Dad got home and then he would deal with us. Being the softy that she was, when Dad would pull up in the car, she would usually release us so he would NOT deal with us. Which is probably why all 5 of us are still alive. I remember the time she was going nuts (as usual) and I needed to be put on the potty. So, she put me on and promptly forgot about me being there. After about 45 minutes, I called out "Mom, can you take me off now?" She gasped and flew into the bathroom to get me off. I still have a ring embedded on me to prove it. I remember the time I was walking through the neighborhood, as an adult (I know what you're thinking, but I am considered an adult), and I looked over at mom's house and there she was, sitting in the shade on the side porch. She was reading a book. So, I walked over and said "What are you reading, Mom?" And she said "My Bible!" Just before Dad passed, my siblings and I promised Dad that we would take good care of mom. And I believe we all did. Since Dad's passing, we all had to take on different roles to supplement the void of not having Dad around. I can tell you, it has been a pleasure. From my perspective, whether it was doctors' visits, house issues, financial and legal stuff or whatever was needed, Mom always had a way of making it a good memory. In closing, I am overjoyed that Mom was trusting Jesus as her Savior. Death and funerals are never easy. Although, it reminds me of the Bible verse from 1 Corinthians 15:55 - "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" And, so, I am trusting Jesus as my Savior, too. And some day it will be my turn. I hope that along the way, I can pass some of these lessons on to my own children. And when that day comes for me to leave this earth and go on to be with my Savior, Jesus will embrace me and wipe away my tears, just as he has done with Mom. What joy! And when I have spent my initial time with Jesus and He is ready to share me with others in Heaven, I know there will be many there. From Adam to Noah, Moses to Daniel, Peter, John, Paul, Joseph and Mary. It will be great to have a time of rejoicing and conversation with all of them and so many more. But recently, someone has moved to the front of the line for me. On that day, I will see my Mom. With her big smile and maybe even something humorous to say. My guess is Dad will be close by. And so we grieve. Yet, as God's Word says, "Now we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest who have no hope." I am sad and joyful at the same time thanks to what God has done for my Mom. Thank You, Lord Jesus. Rest well, Mom. With Love, Al "For God commanded, saying, Honor your father and mother." Matthew 15:4 "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints." Psalm 116:15

Aunt Catherine was my godmother. All of my memories of her are of joy, kindness and laughter. Living apart from the extended family, I always treasured the moments I got to spend with Aunt Catherine and Uncle Tony. I love you and miss you.

I MISS YOU, MOTHER MADRE, IN QUIET WAYS, IN MOMENTS LOST BETWEEN THE DAYS. YOUR LAUGHTER ECHOES SOFT AND LOW, A MELODY I USED TO KNOW. I MISS YOUR VOICE, YOUR WARM EMBRACE, THE WAY LOVE LIT YOUR GENTLE FACE. THE LITTLE THINGS-YOUR DAILY TOUCH- I NEVER KNEW COULD MEAN SO MUCH. YOU HELD MY FEARS, YOU DRIED MY TEARS, YOU WALKED ME THROUGH MY GROWING YEARS. AND THOUGH YOU'RE GONE, YOUR LOVE REMAINS, A LIGHT THAT SHINES THROUGH ALL MY PAIN. I SPEAK YOUR NAME IN SILENT PRAYER, I FEEL YOUR SPIRIT EVERYWHERE. IN BLOOMING TREES, IN SKIES SO BLUE, IN ALL THE BEAUTY-THERE IS YOU. TIME MOVES ON, BUT GRIEF STAYS NEAR, A TENDER ACHE, A FALLEN TEAR. STILL, IN MY HEART, YOU SOFTLY STAY-A LOVE THAT NEVER FADES AWAY. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH MOTHER MADRE AND I MISS YOU. IT WAS AN HONOR TO BE YOUR ONE AND ONLY LITTLE GIRL, BUT AN EVEN BIGGER HONOR TO TAKE CARE OF YOU. REST PEACEFULLY, MY SWEET MOTHER WITH GOD, DAD, YOUR FAMILY, AND ZACHARY. MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN. LOVE, YOUR DAUGHTER HIJA
