Obituary For Charles Robert Seidel

On November 21, 2022, The Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Charles Seidel was born into eternal life. After a serious fall in February of this year, Charles' body struggled to recover, and he endured his suffering with great courage and extraordinary perseverance. A lifelong resident of Pittsburgh, Charles was the son of immigrant parents and grew up in Carrick attending Saint Basil Catholic grade school and graduating from South High School on the South Side.

Charles was active duty in the United States Army from 1953-1955 earning a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He served in the Reserves until 1959.

On October 8,1955, Charles married Mary Ann Garstka of Mt. Oliver at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Married almost 60 years, the couple had two sons, Gary and Gregg. They built a beautiful life in Brentwood.

Charles established ‘Seidel’s Men's Wear’ in the borough of Brentwood, selling fine men’s apparel for 30 years.

Charles was the “4th of July King!” It was his favorite day of the year. As the parade passed by their Brownsville Road home, he served Bloody Marys, food, and smiles. His hospitality knew no limits and guests filled the front lawn year after year.

Charles and MaryAnn were members of St. Sylvester Catholic Church their entire marriage. He volunteered as an usher and for other parish events. Charles was a terrific PapPap and truly loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing the saxophone, playing golf, smoking a good cigar, and the companionship of his very dear friend Marie in his later years.

Charles is survived by his son Gary (Dr. Joan Wallisch) of Pittsburgh, son Gregg (Christine) of Cary, NC, along with his grandchildren Chelsey (Matthew) of Charlotte, NC, Kelly of Nashville, TN, Nolan (Darma)- two great grandchildren Charlotte and Abby of Clayton, NC, and his sister Marilyn Seidel of Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann (Garstka) Seidel, brothers Bill and Jake Seidel, and sister Dorothy Dahm.

Family and friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc. (412) 881-4100; 4201 Brownsville Road in Brentwood 15227 on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 from 4-7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 30 in Blessed Trinity Parish, St. Sylvester Church, 3754 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227 at 10:30 a.m. Charles will be laid to rest at Jefferson Memorial Park.

    So sorry to hear this. Chuck was so instrumental in helping me begin my career. He counciled me and literally provided my new wardrobe on a "Hey, pay me when you can" basis as I entered the corporate world. That kind of individual is beyond rare and I was beyond fortunate to know Chu k and call him "my friend" God bless him....

    Our hearts are broken. Mr Seidel (always Mr Seidel to me) has been a part of my life for over 50th years. I just loved him and loved his company. RIP my friend. When I get to heaven I hope I'm still on your "secret" Bloody Mary list. I'll never drink Clamato juice without thinking of you!

    Great memories of Mr Seidel at Canadota Lake and on the golf course! The foursome that he played with on Sunday is together again in heaven! Rest in Peace! Bob Wagner
