Obituary For Charles W. Maiden, Jr.

Age 95, passed peacefully on October 23, 2022 in Mullica Hill, NJ. He lived until 90 in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by his two loves, his wife of 53 years, Dorothy (Vunak) and his first wife, Inez (Cyphers). He is survived by his children Tom (Denise) Maiden, Chuck (Leslie) Maiden, Marilyn (Carl) Palowitch, and Bill (Maureen) Maiden. He was Pappap to 11 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren, and a beloved ‘Uncle Chuck’ to many nieces and nephews. His friends were friends for life. Charles was a Navy veteran, a Pitt alum (1949), and an electrical engineer who retired from Westinghouse.

Charles was the first born child to Virginia (Hittle) and Charles Maiden on March 13, 1927. They lived in Overbrook, PA. His sister, Virginia (Donald) Sullivan, arrived in 1934. Charles was so loved! In his baby book, his mother called him “the little king” for all the nurses and family waiting on him when he was born. They later settled into calling him Junie (short for Junior). His friends knew him as Chuck.

Chuck left high school early to join the US Navy where he studied electronics. This inspired him to study Electrical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was the first of his extended family to graduate from college. He pursued a career filled with invention and the respect of his colleagues.

His love for electronics and ‘the ways things worked’ permeated his life. He could fix anything and consumed the advancement of technology. He brought home one of the early personal computers, we laughed together playing Pong on the TV, and the internet opened his eyes literally to the universe, for he loved looking at photos from space on his computers. Even his love of music advanced with technology, from Lawrence Welk weekly on television to being a pro user of Spotify, where he would listen all-day to playlists of favorite big band orchestras.

Chuck was happiest when surrounded by family. He started a tradition of annual family beach vacations. The model trains he ran as a child still run today in the hands of his great-grandchildren. He shared his passion for fishing, boating, gardening, and good audio speakers with the next generations. He especially loved Christmas and birthdays. Chuck gave a toast on his 95th birthday which was the last time he was together with all of his children. He raised his glass and said “to the best family.” His heart spoke simply and truely.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Sunday, October 30, 2022 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. A blessing service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, October 31, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a Catholic Burial with full military honors in St. Anne Cemetery, 4040 Willow Avenue, Castle Shannon, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org or the Semper Fi and America’s Fund www.thefund.org .

I have distant memories as a young boy visiting Aunt Babe and Uncle Chuck's home in Pittsburgh in the 1970s. Those times were always filled with cousins, family love & nut bread. I remember visual bits and pieces of their home, especially the big backyard with some trees or woods behind, the kitchen and basement. For some reason, the most powerful and special memories came from the smells of their home...it felt secure, well-established and like family. Many years later, in my own home, I sometimes recognize those same sensations and it makes me happy to remember my times at the Maiden home. All our love to the Maiden Family, cousin Sam & family.
