Obituary For Charmaine Barker

Age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 22, 2023.

Loving mother of Neil (Celine Nista) Barker and Valerie (Bernie) Schoedel; proud grandmother of Matthew Schoedel; great-grandmother of Colton and Jackson Schoedel; daughter of the late Christian and Elizabeth Schanbacher; sister of the late Caroline (Joseph) Miller, Dorothy (Henry) McKlveen, Milton (in infancy), Fredrick Schanbacher, Ralph Schanbacher, Gloria (James) Matthews and Jack (survived by Irene) Schanbacher. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Charmaine graduated from Allegheny High School (Northside) in 1946. She couldn't afford college so she went to the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics for business. She worked various jobs and married her first husband, Edward Barker. She quit working due to the birth of her first child Neil. She went on to have Valerie a few years later. In 1964 she went to work at Baldwin Whitehall School as the secretary. Her mentor Pricilla Summers talked her into taking a state exam. She did very well and in 1973 started working at her lifetime job at the Department of Public Welfare. She started as an intake person and rose to the rank of supervisor until her retirement in 2004. In 1976 she finally realized her dream of college and started taking a few classes. In 1979 she was accepted into the part time Bachelor of Arts program. She graduated in 1981 with honors with a BASW in social work with a minor in Sociology. This was earned in 2 years. In 1982 she welcomed her beloved grandson Matthew into this world. She met her future second husband Bob Morgan at PITT. They traveled extensively. She has been to all 50 states except for Maine. They also traveled to many countries. All over Europe, Turkey, Russia, Mexico, and others I can't think of. In 1993 she married her second husband Robert Morgan. She stayed active even after retirement. She did a 5K Zoo walk/race with her grandson at the age of 80. Her great grandsons were born in 2008 and 2010. Her husband Bob passed in 2014 but she kept busy until the move to her final home in 2018. She lived until her death at Sunrise Senior Living of Upper St Clair. We want to thank everyone there. They took great care of her. (When she would let them).

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Monday, June 26, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. at which time a funeral service will be held in the funeral home Chapel. Interment will be held privately in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
