Obituary For Derrill F. Shankle

Of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully at the age of 97, on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rose Marie; his daughter, Joanne (Sam) Patterson; three grandchildren; two great grandsons; three nieces and one nephew. Surviving in-laws are Joanne Moats of Huntersville, NC and Anita and Frank Porco of Irving, TX. He was preceded in death by brother-in-law, William Moats. Originally from Kingsport, TN, Derrill was the son of the late Henry Omar and Lula M. Shankle. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Lindley and her husband William Lindley. Derrill graduated from Sewickley High School and the University of Pittsburgh. He also attended Harvard University and MIT. He served in the US Navy from 1943-1944. He was employed by Westinghouse as an electrical engineer for more than 40 years. He also was an instructor for CMU and Penn State University and was elected as a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers. A private service will be held to remember him and to celebrate his life. Arrangements entrusted to the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. Donations in his memory may be made to Baldwin Community United Methodist Church at 5001 Baptist Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236.

    RoseMary, JoAnne and family, I am so sorry to hear about Derrill's passing. He was such an amazing Husband, Father, and grandfather. RoseMary, we have some good memories from the Blood Bank days that I will never forget and all of the fun that we had with you and Derrill! It is a very sad time right now and to lose him I am sure is very difficult. He is your Angel now and at peace. May the eternal light shine upon him! Rest In Peace my friend.
