My favorite Don stories: Don was a pivotal joiner to the Thomas Jefferson (High School) Drama Club where we met. He was creative and could build ANYTHING. He ordered a laser projector through the mail which he built (this is in the 70's, no one but him had a laser that I knew) and used it for laser-light shows, that was assisted by the fog machine that he built (lasers are somewhat invisible unless you "help"). He told me day-1 at drama that he would NEVER appear on stage, but later, we needed a puppeteer, since our other ones were all on stage (already) and I talked him into it. He did the Cookie Monster coming out of a magician's hat, lip-syncing to the recording of "It's not easy being green". What he told no one until the performance is that he also built matching leg-covers for his legs which appeared as he himself lifted the table on his back and carried it off-stage. It stopped the show as the audience (and cast) completely-lost-it. The show was held up until the ovation & applause died out, so he was, literally, show-stopper (and in life as well). He also played a prank on me by turning my microphone volume up & down, on & off during a freshman Drama recruitment program on-stage. I continued to fumble with the mike thinking that the connection was loose. But when I called out to him for help off-stage, the entire stage-crew was literally on the ground laughing. I threatened to pull him on-stage if he didn't fix this and the volume was corrected. The audience lost it on his antics and mine in response, showing the Freshman that the Drama Club was one big happy family and could play jokes on each other. That year saw record recruitment. What a great guy! He changed my life for the better, which he did for many.

Great guy. I worked with him on and off here at Duke University. He was the equipment rep that I always dealt with. So sorry to hear this.

My sincere condolences to Kelly, Amanda & Family. I just heard the news and I am deeply saddened. I worked with Don many years ago at KJL, we did a lot of fun projects, traveled to customers and even worked together with my current company. He was great person and will be sorely missed. God Bless you Don and your family. - Bob Magiera

Donald will be missed, he was full of fun and adventure. So creative in everything he did. I loved his wonderful laugh and always a big smile. I cherish the times we all spent together as cousins. May you rest in Gods arms and be surrounded by angels. Claudia Roland

There are no words to express our deep sorrow for Amanda and Kelly. Although there is a plan on when we leave this life Don was far to young to leave you both. Cherish all the memories of happy and fun times until you meet again. Love Gary and Joanne Hertrich❤️

So many priceless childhood memories. It was a such a different time then. We would play outside in the summer nights to creating custom models out of broken model parts in the drawer in the basement on Loyal Drive to concert going in Don's customized Blue Chevy van. May you rest in peace Don, you will be missed by many. -Rich "Chet" Castillenti
