Dorothy Sinderson (Barbour) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 25th 2024 at Asbury Heights in Pittsburgh, PA from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. A truly gentle soul, she will always be remembered for her compassion for others, dedication to her family and a love for traveling the world.

Dorothy was the beloved wife of 68 years to Sam and the loving mother of two children Mark (Pam) and Paul (Kate Ronczka). She was also the proud, loving grandmother of Derek and Jessica.

Born in Olathe, KS on November 27, 1934, she met her husband Sam on a blind date during rush week at Kansas State University in September 1954 and they were engaged 4 months later. After Dorothy worked for a year, they were married on June 2, 1956, packed their belongings and moved to the Pittsburgh area settling in Pleasant Hills where they lived for 59 years.

Dorothy was well known in the community for her volunteering. She was a long-time member of the Pleasant Hills Garden Club, spent many years cooking for the Meals-on-Wheels program in Brentwood and worked long hours sorting used books for the annual Pleasant Hills Library book sale. Her best “volunteering” efforts were following her son’s track and cross country meets and managing the logistics of frequent Boy Scout outings and weekend birding trips by her husband.

Her faith was also a guiding force in her life. She and Sam were one of the founding members of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Jefferson Hills and were active members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Brentwood.

Travel held a special place in her heart. She loved traveling back home to Kansas every summer by car simply because she enjoyed the scenery. Every national park was fair game along the way. Over the past 30 years, she and Sam also visited nearly every continent.

Friends will be received at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 4048 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227 on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of her funeral service at 11:30 a.m. The funeral will be live-streamed and recorded on St. Peter’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/stpetersbrentwood/
