October 28, 1930 - January 11, 2015 Carnegie, Edward John, MD Ed was born in Hays, PA, 3rd of 4 children to Harry and Lillian Carnegie. He attended Central Catholic HS, and won many awards in the 880 and 1000 yard events. He attended the University of Pittsburgh on a track scholarship, and continued there for his bachelors, masters, and MD degrees. He provided general practice with an office in Prospect Park for 10 years, did home visits and delivered many babies in this area. He married Margaret "Peg" Harris on November 16, 1957, and they had four boys during their time in Pittsburgh. He then completed a residency in dermatology at Case Western University, Cleveland Ohio, and this is where baby #5 (a girl, finally!) was born. His co-residents at the hospital had the whole on call room decked out in "think pink" décor and lists of girls' names covered the walls. After residency, they returned to Pittsburgh, where Ed practiced dermatology on Brownsville Road in Brentwood for over 30 years, and they lovingly raised their energetic family. He took care of so many people in this area, in addition to teaching FP and Derm residents from the Pitt, Shadyside, and Washington Hospitals. He provided occ health care at J&L Steel for many years, as well as a stint as team doc for the Pgh Powderkegs women's football team. Ed loved being a doctor, but even more so loved being with and providing for his family. We have so many memories of great trips and adventures. Highlights were a HS graduation trip for Ed and Mike to Europe, a trip to Mexico with Doug, Chris, and Meg, and a trip with Meg to Colombia. He also traveled extensively with Peg throughout the world, which they enjoyed immensely. Our greatest memories, however, were trips multiple times yearly to Ocean City, MD, our home away from home. Frequently other family members were also there, including the Saraccos, Kohlmyers, and Talaricos, and lots of friends too. Dad truly loved the beach, and got there as much as possible for fishing, more fishing, and relaxation. He was a superb packer of great renown, packed all the clothing, bedding, fishing, bait catching, and clamming equipment for 7 people in one car! We have so many great memories there, and that was truly a special place for him. He loved sharing stories of his many travels and fishing adventures. He also was a master gardener, indoors and out. He relished a fresh tomato right out of the garden with salt, and spent many hours with Mom canning tomatoes and jumbot. He had turtle pens built in the back yard; people would come from far and wide with their turtle rescues, to get his care. His family gave him strength and joy, and even as he was becoming weaker, he was determined to get to grandson Justin's wedding in Ocean City last fall, and to meet his 3rd great grandchild Miles in November. Dad's home was always a place of great laughter and activity, with nonstop visitors to chat, or to get medical treatment. Our den was a makeshift office, with frequent in home patients! He was amazing with his conversational abilities, could talk with anyone from support staff to dignitaries, and make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. He was a HEALER, in every sense of the word, and an inspiration to many. We will carry him in our hearts forever. Ed went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 11. He is preceeded in death by his wife, Peg, sons Michael and Chris, and his siblings Madlyn Talarico, Harry Carnegie, and Nancy Younkin. He is survived by children Edward (Jan Lovich), Douglas, and Meg (Danny Wainwright), daughter-in-law Angie, grandchildren Justin (Christine), Adrian (Kristy), Damian (Samantha), Evan, Quinn, and Andi, and great grandchildren Mia, Max, and Miles. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Saturday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church at 10:00 a.m. Family suggests The Maryland Coastal Bay Foundation (www.mdcoastalbays.org) or the Father Sean Hogan Scholarship Fund (c/o Duquesne University, Pittsburgh PA 15282) for donations.
