Obituary For Edwin J. Utzig

Age 77, on Thursday, January 14, 2021, of Jefferson Hills, formerly of Mt. Washington and Baldwin.

Beloved husband of 55 years to M. Lois (Quigley); loving father of Michael (Yvonne), Douglas (Renee) and Gregory (Heather); cherished grandfather of Michael Bingham, Sydney, Carly, Riley and Lexi Utzig; loving brother of Cathy Welsh (the late Greg) Carrington, Ken and the late J. Kerry, Ron, Bob (survived by Michele) and Debra (survived by Jerry) Pasquinelli; son of the late Edwin F. and Madeline (Liebold) Utzig. Ed was a strong patriarch of his family, a good friend to all, a man who would give his shirt for a friend. He was a good father who always cared for, taught, and guided his children. He was a loving and beloved grandfather. Over the years, Ed enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, softball, bowling, along with coaching baseball and softball. He loved supporting his grandkids by attending their activities, from hockey and volleyball games to cheerleading competitions and theater productions. If you had the pleasure of playing a card game with Ed, you know he could beat you at just about every game. He retired from Stationary Engineer Local 95-95A after working at the Gateway Center Complex for many years. To Ed's dearest family, friends and neighbors, thank you for all your love, prayers and kind words as Ed struggled for many days. His family appreciates the dedication of all the health care workers at Jefferson Hospital. They are extraordinary, thank you. Family and friends are welcome for a socially distanced viewing on Tuesday at John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. If desired, Ed's family suggests contributions to a charity of one's choice.

Dear Lois, Cathy, Kenny and all your family, I am so sorry to hear of Eddie's passing. So very many years have passed since I was with our dear Debbie at your mom & dad's home on Boggs Ave where Lois and Eddie were newly married and Michael and Douglas just babies. But in my minds eye those St. Justin days seem like yesterday. Eddie was always the "big brother", all grown up to us, but always so nice and so kind and so tolerant of us silly, giggling teenage girls. I am so happy to read of his wonderful life with you, Lois, and your boys and now their families. I have no doubt Eddie was a great husband, father and grandfather! I am so very sorry for your loss as I know he is greatly loved but I can only imagine how happy Mr & Mrs Utzig, Kerry, Deb, Bobby and Ronnie are to see him again! I will keep you in my prayers for God's love and comfort to ease your sorrow. With deepest sympathy, Cheryl Valenta Schlesinger (Fredericksburg VA)

What a wonderful guy. In all the years I knew Ed -- from grade school -- I never heard a bad word from him or about him. Lois and Ed have been a loving couple and what an example they set for their family. My love and prayers for all.

I met Eddie in 1965 when my fiancee and I visited Pittsburgh, which was my fiance's hometown. My fiance, who had gone to school with Eddie, introduce me to Eddie and his fiancee,Lois. I fell in love instantly with both of them. We shared many years of friendship together. They got married two weeks after we did and every time we visited Pittsburgh, we went out with Eddie and Lois. They came several times to Minnesota to visit us as well. He was a wonderful man who raised a wonderful family and my heart goes out to all of you. My husband, also named Ed, died this past June. Lois and I can only imagine the reunion that must have been going on in heaven when Eddie Utzig walked through the same heavenly doors Ed Kelly had walked through just a few months before. My heart and prayers go out to all of you. The world has lost a wonderful man.

While I only knew Ed for 3 years since I became his neighbor, I felt like I knew him for a lifetime. Ed is the type of person that always had a cheerful wave and hello. Most of the conversations with Ed ended with him saying "let me know if you need a hand". He always offered his help. The hot summer nights spent at the Gazebo won't ever be the same again without Ed being there. He made me laugh many times with his sense of humor. I was truly privileged to have known him. My deepest sympathies to Lois and the Utzig family. Adieu my friend, Frank Kanonik
