Obituary For Elaine Averbeck

Age 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at her home in Whitehall.
Beloved wife of 53 years to Larry Averbeck; incredible mother of Debbie (David) Skowronski and Bill (Kerry) Averbeck; loving grandmother of Amber, Billy, Mallory, Jack, Caleb, Morgan, Addison, Cate and Ashley; daughter of the late James and Catherine Miller; sister of Jeane Fiore and James Miller. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Elaine graduated from South Side Hospital Nursing School in 1962 and had a long career with increasing levels of responsibility at South Side Hospital. She remained dedicated as a registered nurse, having a hand in starting and leading various departments/initiatives such as the IV team and the ICU. Notably, she led the GI Lab within South Side Hospital.
Her dedication also extended to her family and church community. She volunteered her time and talents over the years at St. Gabriel Church and School. She was an active member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers, holding different positions within the organization, eventually serving a term as President. She was also heavily involved in both the Senior and Junior Legions of Mary and the Prayer Shaw Ministry.
Her hobbies and interests included crocheting, reading, golfing, bowling, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren on vacation or at their various activities.
Family and friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Sunday, December 18, 2022 from 3-8 pm. Funeral Prayer on Monday morning at 9:15 am. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Hope Parish at St. Gabriel Church at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to Our Lady of Hope Parish, Fr. John R. Haney Angel Fund, 5200 Greenridge Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15236.

    Each member of our family in some special way has been privileged to know Mrs. Averbeck from her time as a compassionate nurse at Southside Hospital, countless volunteer hours with Junior Legion of Mary, and as one of most dedicated volleyball grandmas ever! We have been blessed to know you and your beautiful family. May you Rest In Peace Mrs Averbeck.
