Fr. Roy Conley died on November 11, 2021. Roy was born in 1935 and attended St. Fidelis Seminary and St. Vincent College. Ordained in 1961, Roy was a parochial vicar at St. Valentine Parish in Bethel Park, St. Cyril in North Side, and St. Frances Cabrini in Aliquippa. He was then assigned as pastor at St. Aloysius in Reserve Township, and subsequently, pastor for 21 years in his home parish, St. Elizabeth in Baldwin. He served 44 active years as a dedicated Catholic priest, being a friend, advisor, and leader to thousands of faithful. Roy was deeply rooted in his vocation, the sacraments, liturgy, and prayer. He loved his parishioners, and had a way with all ages, from the school students and youth group and their fundraisers (chocolates for every holiday!), to the church committees, to the ladies’ guilds and senior luncheons. In retirement, he regularly said mass throughout the diocese. This year marked his 60th in the priesthood. He was known for his smiling, welcoming way, his calm, even guidance and mentoring, and his loyalty to friends and family. With fellow priests and friends, he enjoyed wine, dinners at Tambellini, and golf. His travels once famously took him to the Vatican, where the St. E’s choir sang at mass and the group met with Pope John Paul II. Roy was close with his mother who lived nearby in the house where he grew up. He was a wonderful son, brother, cousin, and uncle, always ready with a side joke and generous with his laugh. Fr. Conley is pre-deceased by his parents, Edna and Harold Conley, and his sister and brother-in-law, Norene (Connie) and Pete Pokrifka. He is survived by his nieces, Kathleen (Steve Montay) and Jan (Todd Bulebush), and nephews, Ken (Deb Evans) and Gary (Bridget Joyce) Pokrifka, and nine great-nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Sunday, November 14, 2021, 4-8 pm and Monday, November 15, 2021, 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Visitation will continue Tuesday, November 16, 2021 from 10-11 am at Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Mass of Christian Burial will commence at 11am.
