Obituary For Frank D. Mastandrea

Age 61, of Castle Shannon. Son of Gracetta Mastandrea and the late Frank "Buzzy" A. Mastandrea. Grandson of the late Donald & Kathryn Ferito and late Emilio & Rose Mastandrea. Brother of Grace (George) Klein, Chris Mastandrea and the late Anthony Mastandrea. Also survived by his loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Additionally, he is survived by his former wife and close friend, Theresa. Since childhood, Frank had an unmatched work ethic that began on his grandparents’ nursery where he spent his teenage years digging out trees and replanting them for customers all over the South Hills. It was here that Frank learned the meaning of hard work and the importance of family connections. He was proud of his Italian heritage and found great happiness laughing and talking with his brothers and sister around the dining room table as he enjoyed his mother’s amazing cooking and a glass of wine with his dad. He was fortunate to grow up surrounded by a large extended family as well. He was extremely close to his cousins, aunts, and uncles. His family extended well beyond blood relatives as he had a large family of friends he truly loved and would do anything for. Frank embodied countless skills in horticulture, carpentry, and masonry. He was truly a master when it came to being able to fix or build anything. If anyone needed anything, Frank was there with his truck, his tools, his sense of humor, and his willingness to share his best work and talents with family and friends. He never tired of lending a helping hand. Whether it was helping a friend rebuild their cabin, putting a new roof on a friend’s home, building forms for steps, pouring a patio, or building a wall or deck, he was always generous with his time and resources. Frank was also always there to ride anyone wherever they needed to go. Almost everyone he knew can say he helped them in some way. Frank enjoyed the outdoors, spending a great amount of time at his cabin where he spent countless weekends around the bonfire, camping and riding quads with family and friends. He loved studying history and watching football. However, for all of Frank’s skills, the most beautiful and profound ability he had was to live nonjudgmentally. He befriended the outcast. He supported the underdog. He picked up and dusted off the fallen. Frank will be remembered for his generous and compassionate soul. He spent his life trying to help the downtrodden even when nobody else would. For that, he is a role model for all of us.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Thursday morning at 10:00. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Paul of the Cross Parish, St. Anne Church, Castle Shannon at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to Castle Shannon Meals on Wheels, 935 Pine Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15234. On behalf of my mom, Virginia Dragone, my brother, Mark, and myself, we share in your sorrow in losing Frankie. We have fond memories of our Christmas Eve spent with the Mastandrea family. We will always remember the warmth, laughter, and strong family bond that we had with all of you. Frank was generous, kind and full of spirit as a kid and an adult he will be deeply missed. Sending love and prayers. Rosemarie Dragone Welsh

It has been such a long time since I have seen Frank and all the cousins from Hamilton Road. We used to have a great time running around the farm. We loved going to Zio Emilio's and Zia Rosa's, with the hope to spend time with our cousins there. Frank was a few years younger and just a sweet and kind kid. That's how I remember the whole family. I remember our cousins up the hill, the Lacek's and the Doria's and the fun we had. It was a big gang back in the day. Sadly, we have seen all the grand parents and most of our parents and a few of the cousins and children, leave us one by one. It is painful and yet, we know that they have formed a huge gathering to welcome each and everyone of us to them in a much better place. They are happy and pain free. We have to feel good about that and know that soon enough, we will join them. We all need to strive to be good people, so that one day, we will be by their side. A song comes to mind named "I can only imagine". I hear Frank singing it... Surrounded by Your glory What will my heart feel? Will I dance for You Jesus Or in awe of You be still? Will I stand in Your presence Or to my knees, will I fall? Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all? I can only imagine I can only imagine Wishing comfort, peace and love to all who knew Frank and all my cousins and family from Hamilton Road for their family members that have gone to their "rest". Love, Anna Vignetti
