Age 89, on Thursday, September 23, 2021. Beloved husband of Mary Ellen Celio Anania and the late Marie Theresa Garnetta; devoted father of Frank A. and John A. (Catherine); grandfather of Nicholas Paul and Lewis John. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. ‘Cheech,’ as he was affectionately known to many, was born in Sevelli, Italy in 1932 and came to Pittsburgh where he grew up on the Bluff. He was the son of the late Frank and Josephine Anania and was one of four sons also including the late Joseph, Saverio, and Salvatore. After graduating from Central Catholic High School, he received a Bachelor’s Degree from Duquesne University. He also served as an Intelligence Officer in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Frank worked for the US Steel Corporation (now USX) as an Industrial Engineer initially at the Edgar-Thompson Works before being transferred to headquarters in downtown Pittsburgh. He spent his entire career with USX and retired after 35 years’ service. Cheech adored his three brothers, his wives and his two sons. He had an exuberant work-ethic as well as a very quiet, but deeply held faith manifest by his love of helping others, always helping them, before himself. Frank was understatedly brilliant and well-versed on everything from the ‘Steelers’ to stocks. In retirement his greatest joy was encountering his first cousins for the very first time in his beloved Italy since he was too young to have remembered them when he left. Friends are invited to come to Our Lady of Hope Parish, St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church, 5300 Greenridge Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15236 at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2021 to greet the family followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Calvary Cemetery will be private. Arrangements handled by the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. In lieu of any flowers please make a contribution to either The Dementia Society of America or the Brain Research Foundation in his memory.
