Obituary For Frederick Herbert Saffer

Age 91, of Pleasant Hills, formerly of Baldwin, died peacefully Tuesday January 5, 2021.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Catherine Theresa (Coyne). Always an inspiring and strong yet gentle father of Bryan (Kathy), Dan (Arlene), and the late Tom and Ken Saffer and Donna Urbanowicz; father-in-law of E.J. Urbanowicz and Sue and Laura Saffer; caring, funny and joking grandfather of Amanda (Andy), Matthew (Emily), Jared, Nathan (Caroline), Jenna, Nicholas, Kaitlyn, Colan, Lindsay, Madelyn and the late Laura; youthful and sweet great-grandfather that would still get onto the floor to play with Lilian and James; son of the late Charles and Estelle Saffer; brother of Lorraine (late Emil), Estelle (Vince) and the late Charles, Patricia and David; brother-in-law of Marian and Red; also survived by many other relatives and numerous loving friends. He was a Korean War army veteran and retired from the Floor Coverers Carpenters Union Local 1759 and a member for over 70 years. He was a devout Catholic and we are comforted that he has been reunited with his loved ones in heaven. He was a true outdoorsman and loved spending time at Slippery Rock Campground. He loved to tinker and tease, and his character, personality and smile will be missed dearly and fondly remembered. Friends will be received at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME INC., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, PA 15227 on Friday, January 15, 2020 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Saturday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial in Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, St. Thomas A' Becket Church at 10:00 a.m. Due to the current public health crisis, masks and social distancing guidelines must be adhered to. To the Saffer Family, Although we're distant, haven't talked or seen each other in a while, we remain family! This news pains me deeply, as I absolutely loved this man. Was he had and rough on me? He sure was. Many years later, his guidance and input on my young life I still appreciate today and respect him very much for being my "Uncle Fred". I miss the PA visits, we wanted to come see him, but COVID messed that up. Rest in peace my uncle, you'll be missed dearly by family and friends forever and already are.

Bryan and Dan, Teresa and I send our deepest condolences for the loss of your Dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families at this time. Uncle Freddie was a fine and kind man. He came to live with us in Virginia to find work when I was in elementary school. He would play catch with me in the back yard. One of my earliest memories from childhood is your Mom and Dad's wedding. It's wonderful that they shared 56 years together. I remember the wedding because at some point that day I fell down the steps in front Grandma Saffer's house and tore the knee out of my pants.
