Obituary For Helen Lorenzi Shaffer

Age 91, on April 2, 2022, residing in Allison Park, PA, formerly of Brentwood and Pleasant Hills.

Cherished wife of 57 years to the late Robert J. Shaffer; world’s best mother to Cathy (Steve) Lavin, Robert (Joi) Shaffer and Diane (Rob) Dice; loving and devoted grandmother to Kimberly (Donald) Angel, Monica Lavin, Scott, Chris and Evan (Alyssa) Shaffer, Liz (Brad) Fetchin, Ryan and Michael (Lucy) Dice; doting great-grandmother to Troy and Emilie Angel, Simon Fetchin and Owen Shaffer. Preceded in death by parents Guiliano and Carmela Lorenzi, brothers Silvio, Julio and Henry Lorenzi, sister Dina Lorenzi Hoelzle, and beloved cousins Ernie, Josie (Carter), Rusty and Ray Malacarne.

Helen lived on Oakton Road in Brentwood for over 70 years, building a home on the family farm. She was raised on the farm with her parents, aunt, uncle, siblings and cousins. They all lived as one big family, and she always considered her cousins as siblings. Helen and Bob then moved to Pleasant Hills Apartments, where they had many, many friends. Helen moved to the North Hills in 2018 to be closer to family.

Mom was a feminist before the term existed. She gave all of her children the tools needed to lead their best, most productive lives. She was a fierce Quiddler competitor, loved all types of puzzles and a good card game. She did many years of volunteer work at St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church, Meals on Wheels and the Food Bank.

Friends will be received at John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, on Thursday, April 7, 2022, 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., where a blessing service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hope Hospice, 3356 Babcock Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA, 15237, or donations can be received via Paypal online at www.hopehospicepgh.org.
