Obituary For Helen O. Janus

May 12, 1924 - September 27, 2018

Helen O. Janus, age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Maryland. A long time resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Helen had been living for the past two years at the Tranquillity assisted living community in Maryland near her family. She was born on May 12, 1924 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania to Joseph and Rose (Halpate) Ondris. Helen graduated from Charleroi High School and worked as a managerial assistant at Corning Glass Works in her hometown and in Corning, New York. She married Edward Janus on January 12, 1948. Together they had four daughters and resided for over sixty years in the borough of Whitehall. Helen was actively involved in family, church, and community activities. She was a founding member of St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church and president of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She also participated in the Christian Family Movement, the Altar and Sanctuary Society and thoroughly enjoyed weekly bingo at the church with her friends. Helen was instrumental in fundraising for Whitehall Library and was president of the Overlook Acres Women's Club. She worked as an administrative assistant for the Baldwin-Whitehall School District for over twenty years. After retirement she was a regular volunteer at Jefferson Hospital. Helen found great joy in her devotion to others. She truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures, being with friends and family, and spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her positive outlook and sense of humor endeared her to everyone she met. Helen, the youngest of three children had an older brother, Edward and sister, Mildred, both deceased. She is survived by her four daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Steiner, Pamela (Daniel) Freeman, Patricia Janus, and Rosemary (Fred) Futrovsky; six grandchildren, Matthew, Marc, Nikolaus, Danica, Sarah and Samuel; five great grandchildren, Chloe, Landon, Jackson, Davis and Olivia and her niece Rosemary Kosakoski and nephew Fred Abel. She was called Helen, Mom, Babe, Sis, Granny, Bubba, Teendy, Chevy and Honuu. She loved each name and answered to all of them. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., on Monday, October 1, 2018 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Tuesday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Catholic Church, 5200 Greenridge Drive, Whitehall at 10:00 a.m. The Janus family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at Tranquillity and Frederick Memorial Hospital, especially those in the hospice unit, for their attentiveness and loving care.
