Obituary For Ivan D. Livi

June 7, 1920 - January 24, 2015

Livi, Ivan D. Age 94, on Saturday, January 24, 2015 of Pleasant Hills.

Husband of Annabelle (Rigotti); father of Darla Jean (James) Mroski; son of the late Attilo and Maria (Lazzari); brother of the late George Livi. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Ivan Livi was employed by the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) for 42 years, assuming its presidency in 1978. During his 15 years at the helm, he took PIA to great success. During his tenure, the institution enjoyed its highest student enrollment, the largest number of graduates, and during the peak of the aviation industry was considered the leading aviation school in the United States. It was also during this time that PIA, on behalf of the OX5 Pioneers, restored the history-making airplane, "Miss Pittsburgh," that made the first airmail flight. That aircraft continues to proudly hang on display at the Pittsburgh International Airport. He served on numerous boards and professional organizations including Aviation Technician Education Council, Professional Aviation Maintenance Association, Pennsylvania Association of Private School Administrators, OX5 Aviation Pioneers, Northrop Rice Foundation and the State Board of Private Licensed Schools. He was celebrated as "Educator of the Year" by both the Aviation Technician Education Council and the Italian Heritage Society. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Rd., Brentwood 15227, Tuesday from 6 - 8 pm and Wednesday from 2 - 8 pm, where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 am.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Ivan Livi. I knew him through his friendship with my father, Clifford Ball, an aviation pioneer in Western Pennsylvania, the first owner of Miss Pittsburgh, and co-founder of the OX-5 Club. I believe one of the buildings of the PIA was named the Clifford Ball Building. Mr. Livi will be remembered for his dedication to aviation education and his contributions to the many aviation projects he led as well as his thoughtfulness and concern for the people he worked with.

Ivan was a gentleman, upright, dependable, and a pleasure to be with. I cherish the time I had with him in OX-5 beginning with the Miss Pittsburgh project. I consider myself fortunate to have known him.

Annabelle, Darla, Jim - Jim and I are saddened to hear about Ivan's passing. Our prayers and thoughts are with all of you. We have many fond memories of our times with Ivan and you at ATEC and NRF. NRF would not be where it is today without the great work that Ivan did regarding the scholarships. We will miss his input. We would be there if not for the weather. Love, Alice and Jim

I am deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Livi's passing. The words in his obituary help to paint a portrait of the truly great man that he was for all that knew him. I had the privilege of working for him and his daughter, Gizi, for a few years at PIA. He was an amazing man, who loved his family and took care of his employees. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. To say he will be missed is simply not enough...
