Obituary For John Charles "Chuck" Riley

March 8, 1926 - January 1, 2014 RILEY JOHN CHARLES "CHUCK" John Charles (Chuck) Riley, 87, of Pittsburgh, passed from this earth peacefully in his sleep on January 1, 2014. Born March 8, 1926, Chuck grew up with a depression era existence, raised by his single mother as an only child. Chuck graduated near the top of his class from Central Catholic High School in 1944, where he was also a three sport MVP athlete. Upon graduation, Chuck joined the Army Air Corp, where he served in British Guiana during World War II. After returning from his military service, he married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Agnes Conroy. Chuck and Ag would have eight children from 1948 to 1966 and their dedication to their family would dominate the activities of their life together. In 1951 they moved to the Carrick section of Pittsburgh and joined St. Norbert Parish where both would be active in school and church work for most of their lives. Chuck was especially proud that all of his children attended catholic elementary and high schools and went on to graduate from college. John Charles (Chuck) Riley is predeceased by his loving wife Agnes Frances (Conroy) Riley. His children include Mary Ann Clynick (John), Michael Joseph, now deceased (Anita), John Charles "Jack" (Margaret), Patrick Martin (Janet), James Francis (Cheryl), Eileen Marie Steffan (James), Daniel Edward (Barbara) and Joseph Peter (Lisa). Chuck was proud of his many grandchildren including Paul Daniel Sullivan, Jacqueline Marie Richardson (Josh), Erin Lynn (Kenette Louis) and Stacie Lynn Riley, Tori Riley Sander (Colin), Michael Aloysius, Kate Elizabeth, Meg Michaela, Casey Patrick, Shane Paul, Bridget Ann, Julie Elizabeth and Emily Jane Riley, Kathleen Susan and Vincent Edward Guglielmi, Lauren Theresa, Ashley Marie, Taylor Marie and John Charles Riley. His step grandchildren are Beth Ann Vinson, John Clynick Jr. (Helena), Shaun Connolly, Heidi Steffan (Mathew Ritenbaugh) Steven Singler and Karin Powell (Nathan). Chuck lived to know his great grandchildren as well, Rachel, Kristopher, Carleigh and Caroline Richardson and step great grandchildren Nicole Vinson and Joseph Clynick. Chuck is also survived by his brother-in-law Martin (Cathy) Conroy and sister-in-law June Conroy. He is pre-deceased by his beloved mother Anna Riley, his father John W. Riley, father-in-law Martin Aloysius Conroy, mother-in-law Jane Ann Dixon Conroy and his brother-in-law Edward Conroy. Friends are welcome to join in the celebration of John Charles (Chuck) Riley's life at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road Pittsburgh, PA 15227 on FRIDAY from 2-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Sat. morning at 10:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Norbert Church at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Norbert Church.

    To all my adopted nieces and nephews of the Riley clan -- My sincere sympathy on the passing of yhour beloved father, Churck Riley. Your sorrow at this time can be lifted up in the fact that Churck is now in the Eternal Kingdom with his beloved wife and your Mother, Ag. Your Mom and Dad have always been dear and close friends of mine for close to fifty years. I am sorry that I cannot express my concdolences in person since I am not in the Burgh at this time. I will say a Mass for Churck this coming Sunday. I know that St. Patrick, St. Bridget and Our Lady of Knock escorted Church into the arms of Jesus, Our Divine Redeemer.     To the Riley family my deepest condolences. As a teenager I remember Mr. Riley as a solid guy that I had a great deal of respect for. As an adult my respect for him increased as I learned more about his own personal history. When you were around him you knew you were in the presence of greatness although he was humble despite his considerable achievements in life. The world has lost a quiet hero and true icon of Pittsburgh. Much love to his family during this sad and difficult time. He most certainly resides now in the house of our Lord and Saviour and is reunited with his loving wife Agnes and his son Mike and other family who predeceased him.
