Obituary For John J. Oestreich

Age 78, surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 17, 2023, of Brentwood, formerly of Mt. Oliver.

Beloved husband of 55 years to Mary Ann (Gross); loving father of Jennifer (Keith) Bogdanski, Kim (Bill) Brasko and Jeff Oestreich; proud Pappy of Gavin McKain and Luke Brasko; brother of Rosemary (the late Tom) Welsh and Henny (Bill) Sumner; brother-in-law of Ray (Terry) Gross, Bill (the late Peggy) Gross and the late Theresa (survived by Rich) Eiszler and Joan Gross. Also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

John's greatest loves were his wife, kids and grandkids. Over the years, he created incredible bonds in the community while coaching softball and baseball. He also loved the Pirates, reading and doing crossword puzzles, fishing, bowling, and playing in the pool league with his friends.

John loved life and he lived on his own terms. One of his favorite things was meeting new people, and if he had a conversation with you, he considered you a friend. He was always eager to go to new places because for him every new place was an opportunity to make new friends, and he had fun everywhere he went, especially when he could share beer with his friends, new and old. His favorite place to share a beer was Hofbräuhaus.

He was faithful to God up to the very end. He attended church every Sunday and felt very strongly about passing on prayers for family and friends, especially through his weekly correspondence with his friends, the Passionate Nuns. John was a proud man and proud veteran.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Wednesday and Thursday, June 21 and 22, 2023 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Friday morning at 9:30. Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Trinity Parish, St. Sylvester Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be held at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies at a later date.
