Obituary For John W. Viehman

Of Scott Township passed away peacefully on Monday, April 28, 2025. He was 95, seven years short of his goal of 102. He was preceded in death by the love of his life Donna (Werner) Viehman, his wife of 72 years. A true patriarch, he cared deeply for his family, friends and business associates he guided, supported and mentored throughout his life and 62-year career crunching numbers.

He is survived by three children David (Elsie) Viehman, Mark (Dolores) Viehman, Lori (Tom) Dowling; six grandchildren Sara (Chris) Diehl, Alex (Rachael) Viehman, Mark (Lynn) Viehman, Chelsea Dowling, Jameson Dowling and Jessica Viehman; and seven great grandchildren Lila, Gaby, Clara, Robbie, James, Eliana and Micah, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His brother Ralph Viehman, Jr. predeceased him.

John was born in the Brentwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh to Ralph G. and Margaret (O’Brien) Viehman in 1929. At Brentwood High School he was a standout athlete on the football and basketball teams. There he learned the value of teamwork and sportsmanship, two traits he carried throughout his career, which included more than 30 years with H.H. Robertson Co., a Pittsburgh-based Fortune 500 manufacturing company with world-wide operations, the American Institute of Research in Oakland, and business manager with Kroger, where he acquired his love of groceries and grocery shopping. He was particularly proud of his 20 years as CEO of Brentwood Bank, which he helped transform from a community savings and loan to a successful multi-services savings bank.

His roots were firmly planted in Pittsburgh. He was an avid fan of the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins, and The University of Pittsburgh, where he discovered his love of numbers and finance, receiving both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He loved roaming the South Hills (often treating family and friends to the best fish sandwiches), and hosting a table at the Duquesne Club, where he was a member for 50 years. He was a 40-year member of Control 20, a group of financial management professionals from the Pittsburgh business community.

He also roamed the world, visiting six continents for business and pleasure. His service as a First Lieutenant in the Marines took him from Top Sail Island, NC to Korea, where he managed logistics and supplies. Upon discharge, he and Donna began their life together in South Park, eventually moving to Bethel Park, before settling at Providence Point when John turned 80. They gathered many life-long friends along the way. In addition to their love of Pittsburgh, John and Donna enjoyed time at their cottage in Conneaut Lake, PA, beaches in southern New Jersey and their condo in Hutchinson Island, FL.

John was a caring advocate for many, imparting wisdom and well-timed humor. Family and friends remember him for his friendliness (his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone was legendary), his generosity and his universal respect for everyone. And, fondly, they remember him for his wicked card playing skills and his world-class old fashioned.

The family will receive friends and well-wishers at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Monday, May 5, 2025 from 4-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in St. Michael the Archangel Parish, Our Lady of Grace Church, 310 Kane Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15243 at 11:30 a.m. Everyone please meet at church. Interment in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies will follow. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to AMVETS, 3309-11 Hubbard Road, Hyattsville, MD 20785 or Bright Focus Foundation - Macular Degeneration Research/Partners for a Cure, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871 or www.brightfocus.org/mdr
