Obituary For Joseph D. Kearney

November 12, 1976 - November 14, 2018

Joseph D. Kearney, age 42, died along with his fiancée, Kathryn M. Schurtz, 35, in a tragic interstate collision on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, while driving to their wedding in Pittsburgh.

Born in Ohio, Joseph grew up in Pleasant Hills, PA and graduated from Seton LaSalle High School in 1995. He was proud to attend Penn State University where he received a Bachelor's degree in marketing, and went on to earn his MBA from University of Maryland. Joseph was Director, Emerging Technology, at Verizon, where he helped pioneer Verizon's entry into the advertising business. He was most recently focused on integration of Yahoo and AOL with Verizon, a role that exemplified his ability to bring people together and build new products with the company. As a young man, Joseph achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, which enriched his lifelong passion for the outdoors, especially hiking, cycling, and camping. He will be remembered for his signature style, sense of humor, spontaneity, his exhaustive knowledge of music and sports, and his love for Kate. Together with Kate, he lived in Jersey City, and loved to travel and host their many friends and family. Surviving are his parents, Dennis and Diana (Heinle) Kearney; his siblings, Dr. Julia Kearney and her husband, Marcus Santos, Anna Kearney, Mary Kearney and Peter and Gretchen (Neidert) Kearney; niece Emilia Dos Santos; and nephew Cole Kearney. He is also survived by a large extended family, including 40 first cousins, and friends around the globe who looked to him as a mentor and confidant. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Sunday, November 25, 2018 from 6-9 p.m. and Monday, November 26, 2018, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday morning in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 1 Grove Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15236, from 10-11 a.m. prior to Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Joseph will be buried with Kathryn in New Jersey. Joseph was a Joy to know. When he walked into a room everyone noticed. He walked tall, with a bounce to his step and with such a wonderful smile. Everyone was comfortable around him , feeling welcome. He had the famous Heinle/ Kearney sense of humor and quick wit. Joseph was Fun, Smart, Caring and So Handsome. We were so excited to celebrate and dance at Joseph and Kateâ??s wedding. Their Love for each other was a joy to see. Both gone much too soon. Their memory will live on in all who knew and Loved them. RIP Joseph . Love, Jan Bruno

I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Joe. It is hard to believe that the bright and engaged Joe that i shared class time with every day for two years (as his English teacher at Seton-La Salle) has been taken away from us so soon. He and Julia are among my former students that I continue to think of often. I will not forget him. May he rest in peace.

Iâ??m at a loss for words, and totally shocked at the suddenness with which we lose two of our friends. I ran into Joe by chance at the Denver airport a couple months ago. We caught up. He told me about getting married to Kate. He seemed very happy. Iâ??ll always remember his smile (constantly smiling) and his love of Pittsburgh sports teams. Rest In Peace Joe and Kate.
