Obituary For Larry James Heenan

Age 80, on Friday, November 28, 2025, of Whitehall, formerly of Brentwood, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family.

Beloved husband of 61 years to Judi Heenan ; loving dad of Kevin (Lori) Heenan, Keith (Amy) Heenan, Kim (Karl Sezawich) Shanahan and Kregg (Katie) Heenan; proud pap-pap of Jonathan (Sofia), Sara (Nathan), Ashley (Sam), Adam (Nicole), Alyssa (Brandon), Justin (Sirena), Kelsey (Justin), Matthew, Nico, Gino (Kaitlyn); great grandfather of Jon James, Jane, Henry, Aoife, Samson, Leo, Sahara and Oisin. Also survived by family and friends.

Larry’s life was a story of service. He served with his heart, love and soul to his beautiful wife Judi. Their demonstration of marriage was admired by all who knew them, especially by their four children. After getting married at the age of 19 to his 17 year old bride, he served his young family through learning to cut meat and was known at grocery stores throughout the South Hills. While raising his family, Larry then began serving his community by becoming a volunteer firefighter. Larry served Brentwood for decades as a lifelong member and was incredibly proud of all his roles, especially Chief. But his greatest love of service eventually came behind a counter, serving generations of families….ice cream cones. For 41 years, Larry has brought smiles to people at the place he created, Sugar & Spice Ice Cream Parlor and Cake and Candy Supplies. Sugar & Spice was more than a mom and pop business to him. It was the foundation of Larry’s family and how we all stayed together. Larry knew he would never be rich making milkshakes, the richness came through having a place where the family can work together, gather at, always call home and most importantly work beside Judi every single day. You can say he accomplished that with whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Larry’s motto in life was that “If it requires pants, it’s not happening”, which is why he will be laid to rest in shorts, the same as you would see him every day, year round. And since Larry felt getting dressed up was “pretty dumb”, we ask that everyone dress casually for the viewing and service. Wear your shorts, joggers, leggings, hoodies or Steelers jersey. It will make him smile and you may even hear his "Impractical Jokers viewing laugh" one more time from above.

Life is short, eat dessert first.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 from 2-8 p.m. and on Wednesday morning from 9 until time of Blessing Service at 11 a.m. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Larry’s name to Drop the Puck on Cancer, 301 South Hills Village, Suite LL200 Box 18, Pittsburgh PA 15241 or at www.dropthepuckoncancer.com.

I remember Larry and Judy as youngsters, in love, and with a goal. They made work look like fun! We never tired of their ice cream or of talking to Larry. God rest his soul, he was a lovely man that we will be sorely missed by many.

Uncle Larry was always the coolest for me as a kid. I loved going to his icecream parlor and when it was right under mommy's apartment was the best. Never forget when mommom turned 80 and he had a huge party at the shop for her. He made my favorite icecream Grasshopper and always made me and my brother feel welcomed. Miss you lots uncle Larry
