Obituary For LaVerne L. Orban

Age 86, died peacefully from complications of COPD on February 28, 2025. She was born on July 22, 1938 to John William and Loretta Siefert Cahill in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. LaVerne graduated from St. Raphael High School in 1955 and married the love of her life, Stephen A. Orban, in 1958. The two had 4 children. She was widowed at age 41 and never remarried. LaVerne worked for Mellon Bank and later for the National Slovak Society until she retired. For almost 50 years, she lived in Brentwood, a nearby Pittsburgh suburb. She moved to Troy, Ohio, to live with her son Sean and his family in 2020.

LaVerne was extremely social and had a heartwarming smile and infectious laugh. She was fun-loving and enjoyed ballroom dancing. With an artistic flair, she wrote poetry and created wreaths and other home decorating crafts. An avid cook, she savored making special meals and food to share with others. A voracious book reader, she was a member of the Brentwood Library book club for decades. She delighted in playing games of all kinds, including mahjong. She developed a love of playing cards as a teenager, a pastime that brought her pleasure throughout her entire life. After moving to Troy, she became an active member of the Troy Senior Citizens Center.

She was a compassionate and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor, and friend. Above all else, LaVerne cherished her family. She is survived by 3 of her children - Sue (Rupert), John (Karen) and Sean (Debby); 7 grandchildren – Sarah (Neil), Maddy (Phil), Stephen (Kayla), Brooke, Ally, Kate, and Stephanie; and 2 great grandchildren - Jack and Ruby Sue. Her daughter, Carolyn Orban, died of cancer in 2020.

Per LaVerne’s request, funeral services will be held lovingly and privately.

Memorial donations may be made to Drop the Puck on Cancer/Duttine-Cavataio Fund (a nonprofit established to support residents of Brentwood battling cancer), 301 South Hills Village, Suite LL200, Box 18, Pittsburgh, PA 15241 OR the Troy Senior Citizens Center, 134 North Market St., Troy, OH 45373
