  Tom Wasser

  Dr. Pingel was my mentor, and a great man. One day while struggling with one of his statistics classes I went to his office for an appointment and he got up and we worked on the table in his office for about an hour. Like turning on a light bulb I suddenly understood it and I mean all of it... He looked at me and said that the thought I understood it now and that I had caught on... well he motivated me to not only finish my Masters degree in Research Methodology but I went ahead and finished two PhDs, one in biostatistics and one in mathematics. ALL of it was due to the time that he spent with me. Now, 40 years later, I owe this man my entire career. He taught me how to think. - Tom Wasser, PhD MEd.

  It is deeply saddening to hear this. I have just learned of Dr. Pingel's passing. My sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to his entire family and loved ones. Dr. Pingel was my mentor and sat on my Ph.D. defense committee. I will remember his kindness, humbleness, and generosity in assisting me throughout my journey at Pitt. My God almighty rest your soul and rest assured you shall not be forgotten.

  Dr. Pingel was a marvel of a human being and a wonderful teacher. He calmly and competently mentored so many of us through our initial bouts with statistics! May he rest in 'power.'

  I was deeply saddened to learn of Louis' passing. He was one of my favorite professors in graduate school. He was a fabulous professor who made statistics interesting. Rest in peace Dr. Pingel. Darlene Tartaglione

  Susan Glor-Scheib

  Dr. Pingel was an unofficial and yet most helpful advisor on my dissertation back in 1991. We became friends throughout my enrollment in Stats I, II, and III, believe it or not. There were two other "Sues" as classmates and we became Sue I, Sue II, and Sue III. He actually gave us beautiful handmade mugs with our respective names as graduation gifts! When I visited Lou at his office, he prepared for a student conversation by removing a tiny wad of gum and putting it in his top desk drawer. He also gave me a brilliant idea for my research methodology and a simple ranking turned out to be one of the most interesting findings of my dissertation research. We introduced Lou to Original Hotdogs French fries with cheese sauce for dipping. I don't think he became a big fan, he probably considered the probability of morbid obesity within a year with too many visits to the "O." I admired Lou's measured way of speaking. I made myself speak the same way during my final defense, which I passed with only minor revisions. To Lou's family, please know how much he was liked and admired by his students, I shall always remember his humor, his help and support, and his kindness.
