Obituary For Margaret "Monnie" (Schmidt) Boyle

Age 102, a longtime Brentwood resident, died on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at Friendship Village in Upper St. Clair.

Monnie is survived by seven children: Patrick (Sally), Margaret (John) Friel, Thomas (Deborah), Susan (David) Trimbur, Eileen (Glenn) Vernon, Claire (James) Eshleman, and Joseph (Allyson). She also had 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and hundreds of nieces and nephews.

Monnie was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Boyle, with whom she attended 12 years at St. Basil’s School, and whom she married in 1943 before he shipped out to World War Two in Europe. Joe died in 1990.

Monnie learned the value of hard work and self-reliance growing up during the Great Depression after her father, John Schmidt, died from injuries incurred in World War One. Her mother, Ida Margaretta Schillinger Schmidt, raised four children on a small widow’s pension and by baking homemade bread, which she sold to neighbors in Carrick. After high school, Monnie attended business school, and learned bookkeeping, which she practiced for 70 years.

Monnie operated the refreshment stand in Brentwood Park for three decades, starting in 1958. She was an accomplished seamstress, and made wedding and bridesmaid dresses for her four daughters. She served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years at St. Sylvester’s Church in Brentwood. She enjoyed riding horses and swimming, and played volleyball into her 50s.
