Obituary For Marian R. Thomas

Thomas, Marian R., age 93, of Pleasant Hills, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2022. Beloved wife of the late Charles A. Thomas; loving mother of David R. (the late Carole A.) Thomas, John A. Thomas and Eileen M. Thomas; grandmother of Evan M. Thomas, Samantha M. Specht-Burns and Collin P. Burns; sister of Betty V. Smith and the late Nancy M. Smith; cousin of Donna Paszek and Keith Russell. Marian was raised in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh on Milgate Street. After meeting and marrying the love of her life Charles Thomas, “Chuck”, the couple moved out to a home in Glenshaw, PA, beginning a series of moves that would change her life. The next move would take the couple to Lawrence, KS, then to Marshall, TX; Cocoa, FL; to Las Vegas, NV; back to Cocoa, FL, to Charlotte, NC and finally back to Pittsburgh, PA. Marian and Chuck were excellent life partners, supporting each other as their family grew, and as unique engineering job opportunities for Chuck became more high visibility and responsible across the country. Marian shared Chuck’s passion for traveling domestically and internationally, and wanted to share their passion with their children. There were many family trips within the country and to Europe, as well as to Central and South America. Marian would many times say, “She never thought the life she has experienced would’ve happened to a girl from Milgate Street.” Marian also shared her passion for history and family genealogy, she maintained memberships in: Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the War of 1812, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and was past Historian and Board Member of the Fort Pitt Blockhouse Society. First and foremost, Marian was dedicated to loving and supporting her family, as well as her extended family, and made her the happiest. She dearly loved her immediate family her mother Lottie and father David Smith, and sisters Betty and Nancy. As her family grew, her umbrella of love and support focused on her children David, John and Eileen, and further to her three grandchildren, Evan, Samantha and Collin, and to her dear extended family members Bree and Chelsea. But it was with her life’s partner, Chuck, and their loving marriage, that fulfilled her life’s dreams the most for that young girl sitting on her stoop on Milgate Street. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Monday, October 3, 2022 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. If desired, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association, 444 Liberty Ave., #1300, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 or the American Cancer Society, 320 Bilmar Dr., Pittsburgh, PA 15205.

Chuck and Marian were dear friends of my parents, Frank and Lois Chepponis. We grew up always looking forward to visiting the Thomas family. My Dad grew up with Chuck and were friends from a very young age. My parents and Chuck and Marian went on their honeymoon in Yellowstone together. Many good times and memories. Blessings of comfort for the family.

To Eileen and the Thomas family. As a former co-worker with Eileen at Giant Eagle, I got to know many members of her family, including her wonderful mother. Marian was blessed with a loving husband, a beautiful and loving family of her children and grand children. She lived an active and adventuresome life. Our thoughts and prayers are for Marian, as well as for her entire family. Geoffrey and Joanne Giancola

Memories from childhood have been flooding in. We would visit Aunt Marian and Uncle Chuck a couple times a year when I was 4-10. The memories were of the smell of Marians vanity and powders in her bedroom. I would be overwhelmed with sweet smells and comfort staring into my sophisticated worldly Aunts bottles of perfume and powders. The other memory is the ring of her laugh and that smile.

I'm so sorry for the Thomas family. Their mom was such a fabulous mom! She was sweet, loving and so kind. They were fortunate to have her for so many years. Many blessings to all!
