Mary was a library patron who knew the exact books she wanted, the exact order she wanted to read them in, and the exact time she wanted me to deliver them to her. Over the course of eleven years, I used to tease her as a way to throw her off this exactness, if only for a moment: I'd answer the phone with the name of a different library, I'd pretend to be a new employee who replaced me, and I even once mimicked the voice of an automated service so that she'd leave a message after the beep. Her response was always the same, a slight chuckle and a "You got me" before quickly running off the next set of cozy mysteries and adventure books she wanted. She was at times what some people used to call a "handful," but she was my handful. I'll miss her book reviews, her gripes about the library catalog, and the way she would tell me that she was about to buzz me into the apartment building before buzzing me into the apartment building. I'll miss the You-got-me's the most. And I'll miss her exactly. -Brandon Taper
