Obituary For Mary K. Lee

August 17, 1922 - November 2, 2016

Lee, Mary (Kelly) Age 94, of Whitehall, among the many women who pioneered entry into the workforce in the 1960's, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, in Medina, OH after a long illness. Beloved wife of 63 years to the late Alfred O. Lee, Jr., a veteran of both WWII and the Korean Conflict; loving mother of five sons, Alfred O. "Terry" (Kathy) Lee III, of Medina, OH, John R. Lee of New Orleans, LA, Craig S. (Elise) Lee of Tampa, FL, Bryan Scott Lee of Olney, MD, and the late Keith D. Lee, formerly of Pittsburgh; proud grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 12. She was born in Rhode Island in 1922 and moved to Pittsburgh in 1965 after her husband took a position with Matthews International Corp. Shortly thereafter, she returned to the workforce, entering the typing pool at the University of Pittsburgh. She rose through the ranks to assume various positions of prominence and retired in the 1980's as Director of Personnel, University Health Center of Pittsburgh. She was immensely proud of her Irish heritage, spent many hours engaged in genealogical research and was active in the Western PA Genealogical Society. She also helped staff the annual Pittsburgh marathon which raised money for the Children's Hospital Ronald McDonald House. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Sunday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 pm. Funeral Prayer on Monday morning at 9:45. Mary K was a good friend of mine and my sister's during the years she was involved in genealogy research and the Western PA Genealogical Society. She was a past president of the organization and did extensive volunteer work as well. My thoughts and sympathy to her family.

Terry, John, Craig, and Scott, Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your mother. Mary will be fondly remembered as a second mother to every child in our Rhode Island neighborhood. In addition to deftly managing the overwhelming task of raising five boys, she successfully turned your home into a central gathering place for all your friends. Her pleasant demeanor and witty sense of humor will always be remembered.
