Obituary For Matthew James Mackowski

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Matthew James Mackowski, who died on August 2, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. He lost a 16-month battle with appendiceal cancer.

Matt was born in 1990 to John Mackowski and Pamela Mackowski. He grew up in Harborcreek, lived in Philadelphia for several years, and most recently resided in Pittsburgh.

Matt graduated from Mercyhurst Prep School in 2008; from Denison University in 2011; and earned a Master’s Degree in Analytics from Georgia Tech in 2023. In his youth, Matt was a competitive swimmer, competing on the Eastside YMCA, Mercyhurst Prep, Erie Aquatics, and Denison University teams. His sense of adventure and curiosity of other cultures led him to South Korea to teach English for nearly a year. Matt enjoyed his work as a Data Scientist for The Vanuguard Group, holding a tenure of 10+ years. He held great appreciation for art, as well as music, travel and food. He loved to try foods of different cultures, assisting in the kitchen, and watching cooking shows. Later in life, he developed an appreciation for Japanese landscape, natural photography, and completing the New York Times daily crossword. Matt took his role as a brother very seriously, being an advisor in many ways to Mike and JJ. His intelligence and sense of humor will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jack Mackowski; and maternal grandparents Setsuko (Mary Ann) Haynes and William Haynes.

Grieving his passing are his wife, Alexa Shupp Mackowski; his father, John Mackowski (Linda); his mother, Pamela Mackowski Logan (Peter); brothers Michael Mackowski (Rebecca); John J. Mackowski (Savanah); nieces Harper and Madison Mackowski; grandmothers Joyce Mackowski and MaryEllen Haynes; uncle Ed Haynes (Alora); cousins Kristen Cole (Matthew) and Colin Haynes and an extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, and in-laws.

Join us for visitation on Friday, August 9, 2024 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a memorial service starting at 6 p.m. at John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Matt’s honor to the American Cancer Society at https://donate.cancer.org/ or American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

Matt's passing is such sad news for me today and I am so very, very sorry for your loss. Matt worked for me as a student supervisor at the Mitchell Center, Denison's Recreational and Athletic facilities . Although I retired in 2020 after 32 yrs. and having student staff each semester around 100-130, Matt stood out and I have no problem picturing him. He was personable, dependable, friendly, and he made great decisions in a busy, and at times, a difficult and hectic work environment, trying to make everyone happy. But he got along with everyone. Matt often worked the opening shifts on Sunday mornings by himself, a time when it was difficult, if not almost impossible, to find a student willing to get up that early on a Sunday. But I never had to worry on his days if the employee had showed up and opened the building on time. I will keep you in my prayers during this difficult time.
