Obituary For Michael D. Hogan

Hogan, Michael D. Age 80, after a year long battle with stomach cancer, passed peacefully on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Vincentian Marian Manor, of Whitehall, grew up in Glassport. Loving husband of Barbara Hirsh Hogan; proud father of Patrick M. Hogan; preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Virginia. Mike leaves behind his brother, Richard (Lynne), their children Jennifer, Richard, and Elizabeth and their spouses and five grandchildren, all of the New York City area. Sister Rita (David) Brink reside in Gibsonia with their son Sean. Barbara is one of seven children in the Hirsh Family and when her six brothers, their spouses, children and grandchildren gather, it is both fun filled and a major event. Michael was a proud graduate of Glassport High, Class of '59, followed by an undergraduate degree from Duquesne University. Mike attended many graduate school programs to maintain his certification as a Contracting Officer with the Department of Energy and Interior. Mike and Pat spent 10 exciting years with the Boy Scouts of America and their activities made for a lifetime of unmatched memories! Mike was baptized on the Day of Infamy, December 7, 1941 and he went on to witness several major events in history such as The Great March on Washington, D.C. in August '63 followed by the JFK funeral, Jimmy Carter's Inauguration, the Ali/Charley Powell match at the Civic Arena, The Immaculate Reception and so many more. Most times attendance at these events were unplanned and as Mike would say, "I was just standing around and then I was in the first seat, first row at the Beatles first concert in Washington, D.C." Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227 on Wednesday, March 9 from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, March 10, 2022 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral prayer on Friday at 10:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Parish, St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church. Pat and Mrs. Hogan, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad/ Mike. I just found out at Mass this weekend and was sad to see I missed his services. Growing up, my dad always spoke highly of him (which is a big compliment coming from Ernie Young). I remember Mr Hogan always having a smile on his face and an infectious cheerfulness about him. I loved chatting with him at ChristLife and other St Gabe's events. He was a great guy. I'm keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers. ~ Elessa Young

Mike - Your death came as such a shock. We spoke to you just about a month ago and you were so upbeat, as usual. We enjoyed so many evenings with you and Barb at our Gourmet Group dinners, never to be forgotten. We will sorely miss our annual get togethers here in Florida. We so looked forward to seeing you and Barb during your vacation and it never seemed like we had enough time together. Our visits flew by. Having you as a friend has been a real gift. Mike was a great coworker and supervisor and he always strived for excellence. He was like a coach and often offered praise to others and was a friend and counselor to those who needed it. I remember running into him on the plane to Florida one year and he heard my voice and so he quickly found me and we caught up with one another. I know he was enjoying his life and dearly loved his family and I am glad to have have known him Good bless his soul.

Mike-- So many wonderful memories of time spent with you and your family. You have been my husband, Walt's best friend since before kindegarten. I understand you guys went to Polish grammer school together. Despite not living close to you we have thought of you and your family as being part of our family. Yearly crab feasts in Maryland, week at Kiawah, week skiing at Park City, Utah. So many wonderful memories. May you rest in peace. Walt and Bernadette Plesniak

I have know Mike since the late 80's we where in scouting together, we shared many camp fires together, we also where part of the Men's Club at St. Gabs. Mike was always a safety first kinda guy, he showed this to scouts as well as lived it at his work place and around his house. Mike you will be missed, thanks for the memories. God Bless

I had the pleasure to write to him during his treatment. I first met Mike about 1976. He was either working at the front office or visiting his aunt, who was working there. The last few years, once in a while we shared emails. He was always a very nice person with an open minded heart. RIP friend. My deepest condolences to Barb and son Pat. Swenam
