Obituary For Nicholas J. Cheberenchick, Jr.

Age 88, of Castle Shannon, on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

Preceded in death by his wife Arlene (Johnston) Cheberenchick whom he met in high school. They were married June 28, 1958 at St. Basil Church in Carrick and had four children.

After graduating from Carrick High School in 1954, Nick attended Duquesne University where he received both his bachelor's and master's in music. He studied violin at a young age under Mr. George J. Gregus and in high school was in the band and orchestra where he participated as the student director of each. Along with a group of four school band friends, he was a member of the "Take 5 Band", a group of student musicians who entertained audiences during their high school athletic game intermissions.

Upon graduation from Duquesne University, he started his music teaching career at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Elementary School in Whitehall where he led students in music and choir lessons for years. Known as "Mr. C" throughout his entire teaching career, Nick held music and band director positions thereafter at Perry High School and Brashear High School where he directed both orchestra and marching bands. He also taught orchestra and band at Chatham University for 25 years in the summer months teaching strings, brass, winds, and percussion. He finished his music teaching career in 2013 after 7 years of educating students at Saint Anne's School in Castle Shannon.

Nick was a member and violinist in the Carnegie Civic Orchestra and The Orchestra of the Alleghenies, formerly known as The McKeesport Symphony Orchestra from 1978 until 2013. He enjoyed golfing, attending the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Pops concerts, and was also active in his church, St. Pius X Byzantine Catholic Church where he was part of the fundraising team involved in making/selling their famous homemade pierogies.

Nick greatly loved and enjoyed being with family and was especially proud of his grandson Aden. He was a great, kind and loving father and a friend to all who knew him.

Nick is survived by his son, Christopher, daughter Beth, son Nicholas (Maria), son Steve (Tracy) and grandson Aden, and sister Judy (Joe) Matthews. Nick is also survived by his niece, godson Mike (Erin) Kowalski, nephews and many cousins.

Friends will be received at the John F. My father has been a life long friend of Nick. His goodness and talent of music is something I will always remember. We are grateful for our visit with him in August and are thankful he beautifully played the piano for us.

He was my teacher at PHS my first year there which was Sophomore having come from Latimer Jr. High where I played violin for 3 years. He was a soft spoken, kind man that you immediately felt had your best interests at heart. He also taught my brother Bob who came two years later. Bob played trumpet and was in the school band. We have fond memories of Mr. C. RIP with love. Lil Arbogast

Dear Cousins, your father was the kindest, most gentle man. I remember so many visits to your home and having your dad entertain us with his music. Sending you love. Tracey

Dear Beth, So sorry to have learned of your father's passing. Reading through his obituary it is obvious that his was a life well lived. He will live on, not in your and your family's hearts but in the minds and lives of the countless students he taught. Keep the faith. My sympathy to all... Peace, Frank Mancuso

To The Cheberenchick Family, For a Great, Kind and Gentle Man. When tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand, that an angel came, called my name And took me by the hand. The angel said my place was ready, in heaven far above and that I'd have to leave behind, all those I dearly loved. But when I walked through Heaven's gates, I did not feel alone, for God looked, smiled at me, and told me "Welcome Home." So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart, for every time you think of me, I'm right there in your heart. Love To You All, Doug, Sharon & Laura Hutchison
