Obituary For Patrick "Barry" Black

Age 63, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

Barry was preceded in death by his mother, Gwendolen Black, and his uncle, Byron "By" Williams. He is survived by his brother, John (Lorenne) Black; his niece and nephew, Randi and Ian Black; and their four children, Gwendolen, Lillian, Coraline, and Amelia.

Born three months premature on August 29, 1961, at Magee Women's Hospital, Barry was one of the earliest preemies to survive at the time, thanks to his mother Gwendolen’s unwavering dedication and support. Later in life, his uncle By, along with his children-Barry’s cousins Wendy, Todd, and Lance-also made meaningful contributions to his care and well-being. Against all odds, Barry survived and did so in his own unique way. He was incredibly courageous in the face of his health struggles, a true source of joy and light, and he will be deeply missed.

As a child, Barry was an Easter Seals Poster Child and endured many challenges, always accompanied by his beloved dogs, Buttons, Patches, and Spot. A passionate sports fan, he was especially known for his love of football and spent countless hours cheering on his favorite hometown team as an avid Pittsburgh Steelers supporter.

Barry graduated from Penn Hills High School and attended Edinboro University until a serious auto accident interrupted his education. He lived on Elias Drive in Penn Hills for many years, forming close bonds with neighbors and teachers who had worked alongside his mother, Gwen.

After his mother’s passing in 2006, Barry moved into assisted living, where he continued to touch the lives of those around him. He passed away peacefully in his sleep. Arrangements were handled privately by the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. Please send condolences to www.johnfslater.com

To the family I send my condolences! Never met Barry but his mother Gwen was my teacher at Penn Jr High school around 72/73 school year and she was awesome.
