Obituary For Paul James Trageser

Age 82, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at UPMC Shady Side Hospital with family by his side.

Paul was born May 22, 1942 at the family home on Knox Avenue in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Raymond Michael & Marcella Cecilia (nee Mattern) Trageser. Paul was the second youngest of four boys, all whom preceded him in death. Paul served honorably in the Air Force from 1960-1964, with two years spent in Okinawa, Japan. After his discharge, he attended and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Business Administration. Paul gained employment with Sedgwick, an insurance company, where he retired in the position of Vice President of the Pittsburgh branch. Work took him to many places across the world, where he refined his love of the arts, especially musical theater, fine wine, and local cuisine. When Paul was home in Pittsburgh, he loved to follow all of the Pittsburgh sports and attend games and matches when able. He was an avid sportsman and fisherman in his younger days, even trekking off to isolated lakes in Canada to clear his mind and commune with nature. Paul was passionate for all Pittsburgh sports, even when team ownership (Pirates), lack of skill (Penguins pre-Lemieux), or the Steelers of the ‘80’s left him frustrated. He was never afraid to call in to the local sports radio talk show and speak his mind. More than anything else, Paul loved his family. He would spend many Saturday evenings out on the town with his parents and siblings. He closely followed and supported all of his son’s sporting activities. When his boys grew into adults, Paul made every graduation, every wedding, every birth of a grandchild, and any other meaningful events in their lives. Although Paul was a fiercely independent and private person, he was always present to dote over his daughters-in-law and his grandchildren, no matter how far he had to travel to be with them. Paul was loved and adored by his friends and family and his quick wit, sharp tongue, and impish behavior will be sorely missed. Paul J. Trageser leaves behind two sons, Jacob Paul (Emily) and Edward Louis (Sudha) and four grandchildren; Abigail Marylan, Natalie Lynn, James Edward, and Raymond Jayaramam Trageser. A celebration of life will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227. The reception will be held at Truss Brewing Company, 42 Old Clairton Road, Pleasant Hills, PA 15236 from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, lls.org.
