Obituary For Reverend Donald Charles Fisher

January 21, 1936 - February 25, 2017

Fisher, Reverend Donald Charles Age 81, journeyed in to heaven on Saturday, February 25, 2017.

Born January 21, 1936 in St. Joseph's Hospital, Father Fisher attended elementary school at Resurrection and high school at St. George. He entered St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, PA in 1953, and was ordained on May 20, 1961 at St. Paul Cathedral by Bishop John Wright, and retired from service on January 30, 2006. Brother of William (Kayo) Fisher of San Francisco, CA, Marjorie (Anthony) Gesuale of Malvern, PA and the late Paul, Frank and Michael Fisher. He is survived by sisters-in-law, Barbara Fisher of Concord, CA and Virginia Fisher of Pittsburgh, PA, and much extended family. Early in his priesthood, Fr. Fisher marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, AL. This exposure gave him the focus for his ministry: The Gospel of Christ acted out in social justice. Fr. Don's commitment to this message of love and service carried him through his ministries as Pastor at Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Pittsburgh, St. Peter's in Slippery Rock, and St. Regis in Oakland. He also served 5 years in missionary work in Tanzania, East Africa with the Masai. His energies were channeled into becoming one of the founders of the F-O-R Center, being active with the Thomas Merton Center and the Association of Pittsburgh Priests. In his retirement years, he great joy was in serving the Retrouvaille community and serving at the Father Ryan Art Center as pottery instructor and friend to all. This shining life, lived in service, was one of pure love, joy and exhilaration. Everyone he knew felt it and he will be sorely missed. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, on Thursday from 2-8 p.m. and on Friday morning in St. Germaine Church from 9 until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the FOR Center, 701 Chartiers Avenue, McKees Rocks, PA 15136 and at chaines@forstorox.org.

Father Fisher will be greatly missed. His early influence on me as a CYO coach and instructor while he was at St. Joseph, Verona has guided me and my family for the past 50 years. May he rest in peace.

A man of God first and foremost and therefore a man of the downtrodden and most vulnerable. He inspired, lifted up, and always left you feeling better about yourself and the world. He will not be forgotten but he will live on in our hearts and memories until one day when we will join him in his celebration of life with our God. Don, your "morning has broken" and you shine like the sun!

Remember Father Fisher when we were students at St. Francis de Sales. That was quite some time ago which proves the impact he had on young Catholics. We were fortunate to meet him.

My most faithful, humble, sincere and loyal friend and spiritual director for many years. Truly a man of God and an inspiration to so many. A low-key but very effective voice for good wherever he went - always the smile, always the quip, always the love for all. Don lives on in our hearts.
