Age 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 20, 2020, of Whitehall.

Loving husband of the late Barbara Ann "Annie" (Murphy) Whalen; stepfather of Mark Murphy, Michael Murphy, Rob (Karen) Murphy, Dean (Gail) Murphy, Jim (Kathy) Murphy, Donna (Chuck) Haley and Holly Tuite; brother of Paul and Dave Whalen and the late Judy Donavan. Also survived by many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Such a kind, gentle soul who gave selflessly to his wife, family and his church. He was a proud graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and loved all things Pitt. A longtime volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul, St. Gabriel Parish, he gave countless hours helping families to get food and assistance they so needed. Family and close friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Sunday, August 23, 2020 from 3-8 p.m. Due to the current health crisis, masks and social distancing must be adhered to. Funeral prayer on Monday morning at 9:15.
