Obituary For Richard Nicholas Whalen

Age 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 20, 2020, of Whitehall.

Loving husband of the late Barbara Ann "Annie" (Murphy) Whalen; stepfather of Mark Murphy, Michael Murphy, Rob (Karen) Murphy, Dean (Gail) Murphy, Jim (Kathy) Murphy, Donna (Chuck) Haley and Holly Tuite; brother of Paul and Dave Whalen and the late Judy Donavan. Also survived by many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Such a kind, gentle soul who gave selflessly to his wife, family and his church. He was a proud graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and loved all things Pitt. A longtime volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul, St. Gabriel Parish, he gave countless hours helping families to get food and assistance they so needed. Family and close friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Sunday, August 23, 2020 from 3-8 p.m. Due to the current health crisis, masks and social distancing must be adhered to. Funeral prayer on Monday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Pittsburgh (c/o St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin), Attention: Development Team, 1501 Reedsdale Street, Suite 3003, Pittsburgh, PA 15233 or by visiting their website @www.svdppitt.org.

    I am so sorry for your loss. Rich was a wonderful man who I had met through St Vincent de Paul at St. Gabriel's church. He was always ready to help.

    Mr. Whalen was a member of our family by marriage. In 1982, he graciously baptized my daughter Bridget. I will remember him for his kindness.
