Obituary For Robert "Bob" K. Lonergan

Robert "Bob" Lonergan, age 77, loving husband, father of two, and granddad of four grandchildren passed away from an unexpected, massive heart attack on May 19, 2022 in his Solivita Community home, located in Florida. He grew-up in the Carrick section of Pittsburgh and raised his family in Whitehall, a Pittsburgh suburb. Bob graduated from South Hills Catholic High School, received his bachelor’s degree from the University of West Virginia and master’s degree through Penn State University. After proudly serving as a military policeman in the US Army at Fort Meade, Maryland, he taught mathematics and coached at Carrick High School in Pittsburgh. He was recently reminded by a former student, now friend, how many of his students loved his quick, light-hearted sayings. As girls’ head basketball coach, he was honored to present his team with the 1989 City AAAA Girls Basketball Championship team trophy. He was proud of their team work and dedication. After his retirement, he enjoyed sitting close to the ocean, dancing, and walking. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. Bob was preceded in passing by his mother, Ida; his father, John; three brothers, John, James, Joseph; and sister-in-law, Diane. He will be lovingly remembered by his two sisters and their husbands, Patricia and Norm Piterski, Mary and Fred Gossett, sisters-in-law, Sharon and Bobbie, brother-in-law, Fred Bixler; and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will also remember his smile and root beer floats. Bob’s life is celebrated by his wife Crystal (Bixler), his children and their spouses, son Chad and Gail Lonergan, and daughter Kelly and George Tarasi. The shining lights of his life were his grandchildren, Megan and Devon Lonergan and Zachary and Sean Landers. He is and will continue to be our rock, our hero, and our strength. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Thursday, May 26, 2022 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Friday at 9:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Trinity Parish, St. Sylvester Church, at 10:30 a.m.

    Mr. Lonergan was my teacher at Carrick High School, just learning of his passing. He was a great teacher, and communicator. He was just a easy guy to talk to, and always would make you feel better after a conversation!! I often ran into him at the Healthtrax gym, and he was still the same great man. May he rest in peace, in heaven, they have gotten one of the best!

    Knowing Bob the last six years one thing stands out most of all and that is his love for his wife Chrystal No matter what he was doing or where he was, if he was with Chrystal, he was a happy man. I know the love he had for the beach and pool. Poolside pinochle we will miss the most but having a great friend like Bob cannot be replaced So I 🙏 Bob , we will miss you terribly, may you Rest In Peace Jim and Jeanie

    I remember Mr. Lonergan as my math teacher at Carrick High. He taught me how to do taxes for myself, to this day no matter how complicated i still do my own. Also several other people that passed through my life .( Saved Thousand ). Thank You Mr. Lonergan I never forgot you....

    Bob had the patience of a saint---yes to remembering those root beer floats, teaching my friend Vicki how to play pinochle, " do you want a ham sandwich", Cris, Myself, and Bob playing 3 handed pinochle, and visit to the beaches in Florida and Ocean City, Maryland, I remember all the 50 some years that I knew Bob and he will surely be missed, but not forgotten.     We loved Bob, such a wonderful man, always with a smile on his face! We'd see him walking daily along the streets in our neighborhood in Whitehall, sometimes along Brownsville Rd. in Brentwood. He would always stop to chat; we enjoyed his sense of humor and wit so much. He was truly a super nice man and will be greatly missed.
