Obituary For Robert J. Aiello

September 24, 1937 - November 28, 2018

Robert J. Aiello Aged 81, died November 28, 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA, after a brief illness.

Mr. Aiello was born September 24, 1937 in Sewickley, PA, the son of James V. and Christine (Knott) Aiello. A graduate of Ambridge, PA's St. Veronica High School, he graduated in 1960 from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh with a BA in Journalism. He also is a graduate of the program for Management Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Business. In 1965 Mr. Aiello joined the public relations department of Ketchum, MacLeod & Grove as an assistant account executive and retired 30 years later as a Senior Vice President of Ketchum Public Relations and Associate Director of the agency's Pittsburgh office. During this time, he was an active member of The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and president of the Pittsburgh Chapter; received the Cornelius McCarthy Award for Excellence in Journalism from his alma mater; and received The George Ketchum Medal, the highest employee honor awarded by Ketchum Communications. Mr. Aiello was cited for his years of exceptional service to the clients of Ketchum Public Relations and his manifold contributions to the advancement of the public relations profession. He was responsible for the largest public relations client in the Pittsburgh office, Mine Safety Appliances Company. He also developed and implemented exemplary programming for such major clients as H.J. Heinz, PPG, and Westinghouse. Upon his early retirement, Mr. Aiello became a published mystery novelist, writing three books. He was an accomplished skeet shooter and was well-known as an avid dog lover. He also pursued a life-long interest in mentalism, frequently performing before social clubs and at libraries throughout the region. He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 35 years, Mary Beth (Dickson) Aiello and his beloved Golden Retriever Dylan. Family and friends are invited to celebrate a life well lived on Wednesday, December 12 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the John. F. Slater Funeral Home, 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center's Animal Care and Assistance Fund, or The Duquesne University Journalism Department.
