Karen
My name is Karen and I am Bob's daughter. I would like to start by thanking everyone that has come today to honor and recognize his service as well as the military members present who have graciously volunteered their time. Robert Schlernitzauer came from a hard working, large family. His father was a man of few words and his mother, who was disabled, raised the 6 children. He often spoke of his relationship with Uncle Hooder fondly as they spent time carrying on as young men. He didn't share much about his military service with his family until much later in his life but we always went to the parade and fireworks in Brentwood and had our flags. As the youngest of his 4 children, and a small child, I remember him traveling for work and working late hours. He made time to rock me in the green recliner when I had ear aches and as I grew older, pick me up from the skating rink or the mall when I was there with my friends. He drove us across the Bay Bridge begrudging to get us to the beach and sat on the porch while we all frolicked in the sand. He taught us how to hunt and fish, how to fix our plumbing, drywall, and make our yards look beautiful in the summer and for Christmas. Dad had "THE LOOK" and no one wanted to disappoint him. For me, however, Dad also led me to my career. I was lucky enough to work with him for over 15 years. We were colleagues and friends. He and I had inside work jokes, shared lunches, and at least 20 minutes every single weekday where we could connect and actually make eye contact. During those moments, he sometimes said little, but sometimes said A LOT.... But his advice and love stuck with me. He was a mentor to many people as he was easy to talk to, easy to learn from and so undeniably wise. He never felt like the smartest guy in the room, but many, many times, he was. He loved his family, and appreciated his friendships. He will be missed. I built my life around him.
