Obituary For Ruth Evelyn Carew

Age 97, formerly of Whitehall, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. Loving wife of the late Harry F. Carew Jr.; she was born in Pittsburgh, to the late Hobart A. Moore Sr and Ellen Moore (Neish); dedicated mother to her three daughters, Phyllis (James) Echement, Sally (Dale) Jones, and Mary Beth (James) Berntson. Her grandchildren meant the world to her, E. Robert (Beverly Williamson-Pecori) Pecori, Jessica (Evan) Walter, Katherine (Matthew) Cleverley, Kari Berntson, Heather (Doug) Allcorn, Allison (John) McHenry, and Geraghty (Shane) Kirsch. She was also blessed with eight beautiful great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her siblings, Hobart A. (Eleanor) Moore, James S. (Vera Jean) Moore, and Lois (Bud) LeJeune. Ruth graduated from Eastman Dental Dispensary in Rochester, NY, in 1945 to become a dental hygienist. Continuing her education later on, Ruth earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from California State College in 1968. As a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ruth enjoyed serving her community and took great pride in being a part of the Bell Choir. She served as the school dental hygienist in Pittsburgh Public Schools for a few years then for Baldwin-Whitehall School District for 25 years, retiring in 1980. Ruth also served as an executive board member of DPS, a department of the PSEA (Pennsylvania State Education Association) for many years. Friends and family will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, PA 15227 on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. (immediate family at 10:30 a.m.) until the time of her funeral service at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to The Gallagher Foundation at Gallagher Hospice, 1370 Washington Pike, Bridgeville, PA 15017.

    Any mention of the name Carew still reminds me of her visits to our grade-school in Baldwin. She clearly had a gift for working with children.
