Obituary For Timothy Carey Courtney

Courtney, Timothy Carey, age 60, on Friday, December 24, 2021, of Mt. Lebanon. Loving son of the late William J. Courtney, Jr., and Marie Courtney Backinger and survived by his stepfather George Backinger; cherished brother of Kelly (Bradley) Werley and William (Juliette) Courtney; doting uncle of Carey and Brendan Werley and Christina and Will Courtney. Also survived by many cousins, step-siblings and loyal friends. Tim graduated in the top third of his class at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Upon graduation, Tim worked coast to coast as a chef. During that time he worked with Michelin-starred chef, Guenther Seeger, and had the pleasure of working for past presidents, dignitaries and several celebrities. He considered himself a bibliophile and an aficionado of classic rock music and contemporary art. His two favorite encounters were with Phil Collins and the Smothers Brothers, both of which he celebrated their performances with them. Tim was a loving soul, friend to all and loved by many. He will be sorely missed. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Thursday, December 30, 2021 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anne's Church at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Assn., 444 Liberty Avenue #1300, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 or the National Alliance on Mental Illness at NAMI, P.O. Box 49104, Baltimore, MD 21297.

    I can remember maybe only speaking with Tim a handful of times, but each of those times he embraced me with openness and enthusiasm in his demeaner. There was never a moment I felt I needed to guarded, Tim in his way, made it known that he was my friend and cared. A bright memory I have of Tim.
