Obituary For William E. Frey

May 11, 1923 - December 27, 2016

Frey, William E., age 93, on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, of Whitehall, formerly of Brookline. Bill had a busy holiday week. He celebrated on Christmas eve with extended family and friends. On Christmas day, he opened presents with his daughter Mary Kay (Bruce) and son Bill (Barb) and his granddaughters Jenn Zvanut (Jake), Lisa, and Lauren Zappa (Chris) and his great grandchildren Emma, Olivia, Liam and Ella. On Monday he celebrated his 70th wedding anniversary with the love of his life, Norma, and again his family. On Tuesday, he was tired and died peacefully. Billy was born in the Allentown section of Pittsburgh and grew up with his four brothers (Warren, Norman, Richard, and Reggie) and his sister Doris. He was proud of his brothers' and his athletic abilities, playing in various football, baseball, and basketball leagues around the city. He met Norma before he joined the Army in 1942. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines as a Master Sergeant. Eleven months after his discharge, he and Norma were married in November 1946. Bill worked at the P&LE railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1982 as Manager of Freight Revenue. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 23 years and was also on aide for Generations Together at Greenfield Elementary School where he and the children enjoyed his reading to them. In his later years, he and Norma moved to Canongate to the apartment he loved. He is survived by his family, many nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends who enjoyed his wit and sarcastic humor. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Friday, December 30, 2016 from 2-8 p.m. where a blessing service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Our Lady of Loreto Church, 1905 Pioneer Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15226 or Angels' Place Inc., 600 Fordham Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15226 would be appreciated.

Barb and Bill. You often hear people say that they share your grief and I am sure that they are sincere. I can assure you that I certainly understand your loss; both for Bills Father and for Barbs Farther. You two were one of the 2-3 couples that Donna looked forward to seeing each year. Look up, you can see her smile. Carey
