Obituary For William J. Malley

William J. Malley, age 76, answered the call to Heaven on Friday morning, September 18, 2026. He passed peacefully at home and in the comfort and care of Marjorie, his loving wife of 54 years.

William (Bill) was born in Youngstown, Ohio, to William Malley and Ruth Malley (Kasony) on November 7, 1949. He went to high school at Struthers High School and went on to the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy. He also earned a Master of Science Degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. During the summer of 1971 as fate would have it, he became Anatomy Lab Partners with a beautiful young blonde, Marjorie A. (Chapon), who laughed at all his cheesy jokes. They married soon after and built a beautiful life and family together in Pleasant Hills with their five children.

William was a jack of all trades - a husband, father, brother, son, cousin, professor, speaker, writer, mentor, Marriott Vacation Advocate, coach, and that’s not even scratching the surface. He meant so much to so many people, especially his family, and truly left this world better than he found it.

He was proud to have coached all five of his children in various sports. In the town of West Mifflin, Pittsburgh, one of his claims to fame was that he was the head coach of the Carnival Beverage Little League baseball team for several years, during which he was undefeated for the majority of that time.

Throughout his career, William made significant contributions and achievements. He is a renowned expert in respiratory care and demonstrated extraordinary, inspirational dedication and commitment to his work and to his patients, students, staff, and colleagues. He served as Director of IUP/WPH School of Respiratory Care, a Distinguished Alumnus of IUP, and was honored with the William J. Malley Library at West Penn Hospital. He also wrote two academic collegiate textbooks on Clinical Blood Gases, dedicated to the six best chapters of his life (his wife and five children), and he spoke for Siemens Healthcare and Bayer. He even had one of the Lost Boys of Sudan as a student, who recognized him as the most influential person in his journey thus far.

Upon retirement, William and his wife bought a house in Estero, FL, as snowbirds and eventually resided there full-time.

Bill loved to vacation….

The last couple of years have been a battle with unexpected health circumstances, but he kept fighting until the good Lord was ready for him. He didn’t let a day go by without finding a way to make those around him smile or laugh, even through the pain. William was grateful and blessed to have his wife by his side every single day to care for him, and he enjoyed frequent visits from his kids and family. William positively impacted so many lives and accomplished what truly matters, leaving a legacy of compassion, love, faith, and a family rooted in these values to carry on for generations to come. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Malley(Kasony), father William Malley, and sister Cheryl Sodeman, and survived by his beloved wife Marjorie Malley(Chapon), his 5 children, Maureen Naginey, William P. Malley, Sean(Ashley) Malley, Keith Malley, and Katie Malley, his 6 grandchildren, Gabriel Naginey, Macallister Naginey, Luke Naginey, Capri Malley, Ariella Malley, Maclain Malley, and his younger brother and sister in-law, Michael (Ali) Malley.

Family and friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Thursday, October 15, 2026 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday morning, October 16, in Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 1 Grove Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15236 at 10:00.
